At the back end of last year into the beginning of this one, all was good with my golf, I'd knocked 12 shots of my rounds in a matter of weeks, had broken 90 and was looking forward to the coming season. Then, towards the end of January something went wrong. I know not what, but all of a sudden I lost distance, a lot of distance, could only hit my 7 iron 125 yds max, and my back started hurting where I was trying harder and harder to inject some "welly" into my swing to make up for the loss. I persevered over the last couple of months as balls were flying straight, just a lot shorter than I would have liked. Anyways, back fresh from a few weeks abroad, I played a horrible round on Saturday and decided enough was enough, booked in to see my pro and went for a lesson yesterday lunchtime.

So I line up and hit half a dozen shots for him. He comes over, changes my shoulder alignment by about 3 degrees, changes my head position and reduces me to a half swing (shoulders were a little too tight from the 4 hours of Aikido training the day before, so I didn't have much flexibility yesterday) but, ..........7 iron is flying 150 yds instantly  By the end of the lesson I was hitting the ball a treat, how happy was I, £20 well spent, just wish I'd gone to see him a few weeks ago. And there was no back pain involved as I was back to swinging as I should be, not how I thought I should be. Moral of the story, when things start to go wrong with your golf, get a professional eye cast on the problem, it may save a lot of pain and hurt :)

I would generally put a total loss of distance down to a loss of spine angle. If you make sure your posture is correct at approx 40° then you will hit the ball with your big muscles and not just your hands. I'm guessing you strained your back or had tight muscles and your body was subconsciously making you stand taller (too upright).

I can't say I've ever known any other fix (or cause). Check your posture regularly by looking at your reflection in the patio windows at home :)

I was having lessons regularlly over the last few years, its cost me a fortune to be honest & over the months prior to me stopping I really wan't noticing any improvements & infact found on one or two occasions I was walking off worse. I put this down to a sort of Overload of information over a period of time.

I'd most definitly recommend anyone have lessons, its just that if you have lessons on a regular basis sometimes a break for them can be good. I know I'll need lessons again at some stage, but am making a concious effort to not at the moment & simply dip into the knowledge of what I've learned over these last few years to identify any problems in myself. Usually fairly easy as main issue is & always has been alighnment. Get that right & I'm ususally not too far off. Had some reverse pivot issues at the start of the season, though easily spotted that myself. And have been adressing this aswell.

If someone either has never seen a pro or its been some time since they've seen one, then why not see one for a game M.O.T.

Re- the Posture issues, its one of those key elements everyone needs to get right for an efficient swing.

I'm wondering if your shoulders were open at address and head tilted back. That would encourage an out to in swing making the clubface open at impact and adding loft, therefor losing distance.
Just a thought.

I would definatly agree that regular lessons are a great way to keep bad habits in check you can also use a video camera, a lot of the time these things will stand out imediatly once you know what your good swing looks like and its especially good if you develop problems putting

If you have a lesson like once a month or every 2 months then these wont come into your game im not saying mine isnt in need of a couple of lessons well you get the picture :D
