You've never been to Scotland I take it? Believe me, I'm a fan of the Belfry but there are a handful in Scotland head and shoulders better

I said country, not UK. I only included 2010 as its often compared to the Belfry.

It's also reachable without an 8hr drive for me

So when you played this bland and poorly designed course i take it you ripped it apart and shot well below your handicap?

If the brabazon never held the rider cup it wouldn't get the criticism it does. When anything in life is put on a pedestal it seems human nature to want to knock it off.

I agree the brabazon is a overrated course. Perhaps its because i play it every week. But to say its poor is just silly. The condition of the course is amongst the best you can get and the layout is spot on.
Wether it comes down to bribery or persuasion i dont know but even if it was they wouldn't hold the most prestigious of golf tournaments multiple times on a potato field!!!!!

Quality of design isn't related to difficulty of play. You could build a course with 500 yard long par 5s down 15 yard fairways with knee high rough and it would be very tough but utterly bland and forgettable. The Belfry may well be the best the designers could have done with the land, but the land just doesn't suit a golf course. The best courses are built on land that has some natural shape and movement, or else they have gazillions spent to create some shape.

As it happens, I played pretty well last time at The Belfry. I also played pretty well at The Oxfordshire and I can't stand that either.

I agree that it wouldn't get the same stick if it hadn't hosted the Ryder Cup, but it has, so it does. There are plenty of famous courses I love, so it isn't a pedestal thing.

As for playing events on potato fields, you should take a look at the European and PGA Tours. They play on plenty of poorly designed courses so long as the resort owner will stump us loads of cash to get the event. Most of the pros don't care. They would play down the motorway if there was a cheque at the end of it.

The Brabazon wouldn't get as much stick if it hadn't hosted the Ryder Cup but then it wouldn't be rated as highly as it is and wouldn't get as many visitors as it does if it didn't

First of all how do you know what a pro will play as long as there's a cheque? Do you know any tour pro's? I'm personally friends with 2. Both love the brabazon

Secondly how do you know the land doesn't suit the golf ccourse.

Never played there but it looks like it would be a fun place, if a bit pretentious (but that’s using their website to form that opinion)

Got to say, I played the Brab earlier this year, and wasn't a massive fan, but I think it was due to company (got put together as an organised trip and didn't really know the people), and the weather. I am returning next year with a group of mates, so hopefully it can be a better experience

There are very few resorts in the country that can compete with the Belfry in terms of having at least two courses and good hotel.

Imo, the brabazon is better than both East Sussex Nationals, St Pierre, Stoke by Nayland & Forest of Arden. I also think it's better than the 2010 (now that is just a glorified field)

The only place I would rather play and stay would probably be St Mellion.

Places like Woodhall Spa can't be counted as they don't actually have a hotel on site.

I may be way off the mark as I haven't played the Belfry but Slaley Hall has 2 great courses and the hotel is decent.

Sorry mate, but Slaley has one decent course and one very average course. The Hotel is also prodigiously expensive and miles from anywhere, so you're pretty much restricted to the Hotel bars.. I did enjoy it there, but it was mainly the company, rather than the setting..

The distance of the hotel is a problem. Maybe I'm blinded in my view as I probably played my best golf ever and took away our annual golf trip trophy and money.

The Belfry is awesome for some, usually those that similarly think that Dubai is a nice holiday destination.

I agree with this. The hunting is an amazing course that i have in my top 10 but the other was crap. True about the hotel prices too!
