Belfry - Best Golf Course and Hotel in England

I stayed there not so long back and thought the hotel/bars very good. Once out on the course it was good too - never thought I'd say that. But best in England? It maybe is, but I prefer staying at a hotel away from a course, e.g. at Woodhall or H4H days. I'd sooner go somewhere where you can have a bit of a pub crawl and eat on the hoof.

Usually awarded by associated companies direct or indirect to where the most advertising has been spent, in other words, most awards like this are bought to a certain extent, but, in saying that, if the award if for a resort style hotel & course/s, let's name the better ones that offer better, if there are any?

Maybe the guys handing out the awards copped off in the Bel Air?

As a resort it does take a bit of beating and the courses are immaculate. Is the Brabazon worthy of its high ranking as a course? IMO no but stick it all together and I can see why it's rated so highly

Have you been to the belfry in the last 18 months?

Done both in the past year. Personally think Celtic is much better than The Belfry, courses and hotel.
Heading back to the belfry as a large group next year, so let's see if it grows on me then...

The Brabazon is well known to be a mediocre golf course with a majority of forgettable holes and a few memorable, but not necessarily in a good way, others.

I can't comment on Bel Air, as I have never been, but I hear it is pretty easy to score well there, although like a round on The brazen, you will probably regret it later.

These awards are very rarely presented for what it says in the title. You need to look a bit deeper into who has presented the award and as someone else has mentioned it could be because The Belfry has spent most on advertising that year with the presenter. Another example would be the chip shop that claims to be the best one in the UK because they have the award that says so but that was presented by the supplier who sold them the cooking fat/lard that they use and they were their best customer.

With regards to The Belfrey, that is the only place I have stayed this year so I cannot comment on any of the other candidates. The Belfrey has everything that I would personally want in a golf resort, driving range, three courses, gym, pool, spa, restaurant, bars, night club (optional). I didn't particularly enjoy my stay there but that was because the first night was spent listening to my roommate losing a third of his body weight in the loo.

In the interests of fairness I suggest that GM should run their own competition to see which is the undoubted No 1 course and hotel in the UK. The only way that they can do this properly is to send a party of (say) twelve forum members to the top ten candidates for a weekend stay at each resort. This should not cost GM anything as the honour of winning the only award that matters will have the selected candidates falling over themselves to host the panel. MH the ball is now in your court.

Oh and by the way, I have to be on the panel as I suggested it.

Can I just point out that Celtic Manor is in Wales and the award was for England

Can't comment on other course/hotel resorts in England, but can say that I was very surprised and impressed with the Belfry when we stayed there on Masters Sunday. Great service, rooms weber good and the craic and Guinness flowed well in Sam's Bar. The courses are not the greatest, but thoroughly enjoyed walking in the footsteps of heroes and the stay overall.
