Being branded a cheat....

tbh, the guy was completely out of order. As a 2 handicapper he should know the score by now.

The reality of it is a 2 handicapper is always going to struggle in handicap comp. Sooner or later he's going to run into a mid-high hcp who's having a good day. And he'd have to have a brilliant day to even stand a chance.

I tend to do well in match play comps as I do string a lot of pars together and throw in the occasional birdy. But I'll also throw the occasional triple or worse in sometimes. Which in match play just costs me a hole and not 2-3 shots.

End of the day, bad form on his part.

Very well done on keeping your cool and not biting and on what sounds like a deserved win.

It's all too common getting that anything above a 10 HC is seen as 'sub-standard' by some low handicap players.
Few years ago at my old club, and this was in a club knockout so against fellow members, I had a similar occurrance, playing a scratch player when I was off 10 and was, like you, gross +3 at the turn and he was 4 down and +6 at the turn.
He commented that I should be off 3 or 4 and definitely not 10, to which I replied that maybe he should be off 4 or 5 and definitly not scratch.... did not go down well at all and he never uttered a word the rest of the round. Eventually he won 1Up and just walked off at the end, no handshake or well played.

Some people, I concluded, are just tossers.

What i can't believe though Grieg, was he saw your swing and still thought you should be off 3 or 4;)

Where's my 3 wood by the way?

Sounds as though your opponent was throwing his toys out of the pram because he was losing! I shouldn't worry about it! :)

Pretty much it in a nutshell.

Onwards and upwards. 3rd round tie on Friday against a guy from the same club with me giving 2 shots. Lined up to be a good match.

Statistically the lower handicap player wins 55% of the time on a full handicap difference basis, that's a stat I got from the SGU a few years ago so the lower player starts with an advantage. Cant condone this guys behaviour, even if he thought you were a bandit he needs to keep that to himself and play the game, be mannerly in the spirit of the game. The nature of being 13/14 handicap is often that you're pretty good players but just have trouble putting 18 together so can go toe to toe with low handicappers easily in matchplay on a 'good' day. Lower handicap players know this and just have to get on with it. Very poor show from the guy in question.

I've been accused to my face of being a bandit and protecting my handicap after beating someone in a match.
Not pleasant at all

Great work on keeping your cool.
I have to admit that the guy you were playing sounds like a complete plonker and I bet it has irked him for days that he was playing a 'bandit'. He probably downloaded on his wife or his mates in the pub about how the game is full of cheats and he is the only gentleman left in the sport.

Losing isn't fun and I'm as competitive as you like but you have to win with grace and lose with grace in this sport (who's grace?).

congratulations on the good round of golf and hope it carries into the next round.

Strange how people react, I got beat in the 2nd round of the HDID by a chap off 16 who played the last 9 holes me played in one over gross, just said really well played, never crossed my mind to accuse him of anything, I know its something I am capable of doing myself.

I wouldn't worry. If you can't lose with good grace and humour then don't enter. My dear departed old man use to say "always play to win and whether you do or don't be humble in victory or defeat"

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same.....
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
