Hi guys im 25 and from the bolton area ive just been bitten by the golf bug and now cannot seem to stop going ! im in and around the 100 mark which im pretty pleased with but feel my concentration has been letting me down when i get to the last few holes, anyway im struggling to find consitancy with y drives and hitting them straight would you guys reccomend lessons? also im currently playing with some cheap dunlop clubs as i wasnt sure if i would like golf and thought id buy cheap at first now i know im going to stick with it im thinking of upgrading to some better ones my budget is around £100 ive heard mx17's mentioned a few times but really not sure also should i get custom fitted and if i buy off ebay would it be a case of taking them to a local pro etc?
i know youve probs all had these questions a million times but thought id introduce myself and see if i can get any help thanks guys!

Probs a really stupid question but would i say to the pro i want a lesson on my driving or putting or chipping etc and he'd spend the 30 mins on that specific thing or does he teach little bits of everything in that time?

Welcome dude! I'm in the Bolton area too. I haven't been playing for too long either and also have cheap Dunlop clubs! Welcome to the forum :-)

These guys are really helpful so make the most of it and enjoy!

Welcome

i would say spend a bit on a basic lesson, then get second hand a set of irons such as Di7 or MX17

Wait a bit before getting a driver and decent putter

You tell the pro what you have told us, and he will guide it from there, don't fret he's a professional and that's his job.

SO when i get new clubs would you reccomened them getting custom fitted? whats the average price for this? and would i simply take them into a pro? thanks again guys

Custom fitting means you go and get measured up (your body and swing mechanics eg height, swing speed, plane etc) for clubs which are then produced to fit you (club head, shaft choice etc). You don't buy the clubs and then after they are fitted by a pro.

I would echo the advice to get lessons first and talk to your teaching pro - most realise they are in the service business and are really good at putting you at ease

tbh, I wouldn't get your clubs fitted for a while. You won't have a distinct swing set in place yet, especially if you start taking lessons, as your pro will alter you about a bit, so just stick to a regular size for now.

Lessons are where the wisest money will be spent at this point, nothing will improve your game more, unless you play with someone who's a strong teacher(i had a bit of both, great help).

Welcome Karl.

As for the above question I'd say it's your money so you should be able to ask for a lesson on something specific if you want to.

GIVE IT UP, GIVE IT UP NOW BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

No seriously. Get lessons and enjoy yourself it's a great game with some great people.

Go and see your pro (or one someone recommends as good) explain where you are and listen to his advice re lessons/clubs.

ps: I would avoid a golf superstore set up where your interest might not be their 1st concern.

Good luck and welcome.

like others have said, getting fitted for irons wouldnt be beneficial as you wouldnt have an enough of a repetitive swing to really benefit from them

I would get your pro to have a look at your swings and let him decide whats best to work on

if your struggling with the driver don't use it, if you have a 3 or 5 wood use that until the swing improves, you may lose a little distance but keeping the ball in play will help bring the scores down.

One of the best bits of advice I have ever been given, when I was told this, I was very sceptical, and wondered how I would be able to hit ball anywhere, but keeping it straight and on the fairway is far more beneficial for me than being able to slap it a mile!

Hi , i am recently bitten by the golf disease , Lessons were the best thing i ever did , Guy got me to do a few swings , videoed (is that how you spell it ) them and then showed me all the things i was doing wrong , drew little lines all over the video to explain angles and planes and stuff , then got me to hit some more balls and so on and so forth then had lessons on chipping and putting and bunker play (not my strongest point lol) . I loved every minute of it and was given a little book with things i need to improve and some drills , allthough my scores actually went up after the lessons as i was trying to regroove a new swing , everything seems to have fallen into place now and i feel confident that i might have half a chance of being able to half play the game
