Been looking at replacement Irons

After my 5 iron snapped last night, the driving range still hasn't found my 5 iron head, so I've been out looking at what's currently out their and I surprised myself with what I liked, namely:-

  • Callaway Apex
  • Callaway X2 Hot pro
  • Mizuno JPX 825 Pro
  • Mizuno MP-64
  • Taylormade Tour Preferred MC
  • Titleist AP2 714
  • Wilson FG Tour M3

I've not hit any of them yet, I was just perusing the selection in American Golf and when looking down at a 4 Iron at address I like the look of the above.

I'm thinking I may book a fitting early next week and give them a try.

From personal experience there is very, very little between the MP64 and their predecessor the MP63.

When I was fit I had a play with the 64 and was hard pressed to spot a difference aside from the price.

If you can get 63's new you'd save yourself a tidy packet.

That said. You won't be bald to be fitted for 63's now so 64's may force you'd hand if you decided on the Mizuno route.

Like the look of the new TM Tour Preferred. Might give them a bash when I try the I25 and I20 out on Friday

Re: Been looking at replacement Irons

Personally I'd be looking at the lines of the scoring clubs, as those are ones that you will be looking at most of the time .... unless your so short off the tee that a 4 iron is your goto club to reach the greens ;)

I've got my scoring clubs, as per my signature (Cleveland 588 RTX 45, 50, 56 and 62) and in my bag I have a 5 wood, which sees little use, so if I opted for 3 to 9 I have the option of a longer iron and one less wedge, or if I went 4 to 9 I have get to keep all my wedges if the bag, so I can chop and change as required.

Re: Been looking at replacement Irons

I've not seen the i25's but I can thoroughly recommend the i20's - great feel, compact squat scoring irons and typical ping forgiveness

I did look at the offerings from Ping but thought that the top line looked a little chunky.

Re: Been looking at replacement Irons

Go with an open mind!

Whatever has the best results go for, I didnt really consider Ping irons I was 90% certain id end up with Mizuno's. Funny how things work out.

Re: Been looking at replacement Irons

How about a 5 Hybrid?

Save yourself loads of cash and probably loads of shots too!

Purely because it's the longest of your current set.

Could easily become you 'go to' club too. I know a couple of folk who have these - neither over 50 either!

Find it strange u would find the top line of the pings (i20/25) to look a "little chunky" when u have been playing cg16 irons for nearly 3years......??

The ping i range are good looking clubs
Not really what I'd call "chunky"

It's what I've gotten used to, my CG16's are in black, so yes while they have a thick top line aesthetically I don't mind looking down at it. When I was in AG looking at different manufacturers models, apart from the Wilson (finished in black) they were all your standard polished chrome look or satin finish and some of the clubs I picked up to my eye were not that appealing.

Re: Been looking at replacement Irons

The top line is important to me and the I series is smaller than my G25's but it's the size of the head itself that I am preferring. Much smaller and something I feel I can hit with confidence but also stand with the shorter irons and play delicate shots without looking on a big chunk of metal

Re: Been looking at replacement Irons

Had a hit with the TM TPMC at the weekend

Lovely looking clubs at address and feel very nice of the sweetspot

Didnt get enough extra compared to my current MC's to justify the cost to upgrade but well worth people looking at as an alternative to the AP2's or I series.

Re: Been looking at replacement Irons

So the driving range never found my club head, so I've arranged a fitting, but I've been looking at the clubs in the list in my OP and the lofts differ a lot from my current set, except for the Callaways which are almost identical across all the clubs.

Apart from the Callaways all the others are a full club weaker than what I currently use, which does go some way to explaining why when I flush my 5 I can send it out to 200yds plus. Now knowing the standard lofts it may make a difference in what club I choose.

Without adding any more to the table I checked the Nike VR forged irons and Ping i25 and S55 and their 3 irons start at 21 degrees.

This explains why Callaway can say they go longer as they are club stronger than all the others.

Looking forward to the fitting, I know which set I hope comes out on top, but we'll just have to wait and see.

How often do you flush your 5 iron?

Re: Been looking at replacement Irons

Forget what looks nice, forget the name on the brand, try out and buy what you feel you will get on with the best.

So many people have to buy certain brands and because they like the look of certain clubs. What works for you is what matters.
