Couple of weeks ago, played a better ball comp. I got paired with a Retired gentleman who played off 16. It was us against a couple of beefy lads who played off 7 and 11. I guess the combined bicep width of me and my PP would have fallen short of either of them. They also hit the ball miles. After the opening drives, I was not sure why we bothered to turn up. But as we went around the course, it dawned on me that they were not the very best when it came to short game and one of them was having an off day. Finished the day with a win .. 42 pts v 40 - you could not wipe that smug look off my face.

I had not seen such long driving in a long while, if only they could improve their fairways hit. Also had never seen anyone use a 2-iron. On our 17th, hit a cracking drive. The 7hcer, took his 2 iron and got it about 20 y short of me. What a lovely game and thank got for the handicapping system which allows the hacks, Srs, beer bellied to take on the big hitters.

From my experience on the first hole, when people are drawn against an unknown group, do you get intimidated by beefy lads or people who hit cracking drives or have been stretching / warm ups. How do you size up your unknown opponent on the first tee..

It's not on size/how far you hit the ball
You could hit it 200yrds and beat someone who smacks it 300yrds
You could even beat them off scratch!!!
Short game is where it matters

I don't.

I always start from the premise that handicaps are correct, and how they achieve their scores is irrelevant.

Anything else is either a waste of time or, worse, a distraction from your own endeavors.

EDIT - and I can't see the merit in hitting a 2 iron 20yds behind someone's good drive either; unless the 2 iron's in the perfect spot and the drives not!

It's a dogleg with cabbage and sloped all around.. So both my drive and his 2i were in decent place.. If he took out his driver, had wold be OOB.

The low handicappers can be beaten if only by complacency on their part, I mean if they know they can hit a drive 250yds but it's not always as straight as they would like they may not even consider using a 3 wood on a tight hole and being in a better position to hit the green.
some low handicappers that I know like to hit their drivers all the time but then scramble to make par instead of using a variety of shots that would see them in a better place to birdie a hole.

For some people their ego is their biggest handicap on the golf course.
