So once again, having spent some trawling through the archive in here, I have another question...

Balls? So many different types and makes, I don't even know where to begin. From reading a few previous threads, I know that part of the answer is going to be along the lines of "find what works for you, and find something you like", but I don't want to waste a ton of money trying to find the right ones for me...

So what's the difference between a "soft" ball and a harder one?

Distance isnt a huge problem for me, as I train a lot in the gym so I'm quite powerful, and don't struggle to get a decent distance for someone of my ability. I know that will come with practice.

I guess I'm looking for something that allow me have more control, rather just something I can give a good clout and it will go miles... Any suggestions?

Oh and something that I wont mind losing a "few" of as well!

Your answers in the past guys have been great, so thanks in advance again :-)

Depends what you want to spend. If you want to try several types without paying then get out on the course without clubs and walk around the areas where ball get lost you could always do this during a practice round.

If you don't want to go to the effort then have a look in the proshop. A lot of shops at clubs will have buckets of found balls. Sometimes they have a seperate one for premium balls and another for cheaper balls.

Have a sift through them and get a few brands to try and they are usually cheap.

If you want feel then you are probably looking at mid range balls at the very least, Srixon AD333, Soft feel, Nike PD Soft, Wilson DX2 or the new Titelist Velocity will be a good place to start.

Moving into something else you could start with Wilson DX3 moving into the high end balls such as Pro V1, Z-Star, Nike 20XI etc.

Wish there was a single answer that could be given but really there is so much choice now that it's hard to say as everyone has thier own personal preference.

The difference between soft and distance is feel off the club face and control around the green. The type of course you play can have a bearing too, from your post it sounds like you are wanting at least a middle of range ball maybe heading towards premium. The nxt/nxt tour are decent, I play pro v1 I have tried pro v1x and penta and found them a little firm for my liking. I will leave for others to comment on Wilson srixon and Bridgestone as I believe these are quality too but have not tried personally yet.

Have been using the Srixon AD333 myself as a high handicapper looking for a good all-round ball and was quite content it does the business, but at a company golf day last Friday I was given some Titleist Velocity balls and was impressed by the 'feel' and performance. I've always been a little sceptical about players being able to feel the difference between balls of comparable cost etc but the Titleist certainly seems to give a better feel than the AD333.

I've been playing the DX3 this season and found it a good ball.

Yesterday I played a Pro V1x for 9 holes + a little practice pitching a chipping and was pretty much blown away with how well it performed.

I'd recommend Titleist Dt SoLo's as they spin less off the driver than the Srixon Ad333's, and they still have some control, but the Srixon's are still a good ball to use

Well, I have invested in some Titleist DT Solos. Cost me £13.50 for a dozen. Took them up to the range today, and after having blasted 50 range balls, took these into the short game area. Must admit, I am really impressed. I mixed them in with some lake balls that I got, and was really impressed with the way they behaved. Felt nice of the club face and behaved themselves on the green. Played a few longer shots with them too, and didn't lose a single one. Gonna stick with these for now, and will let you know how I get on with them, during my round with Louise_a on Friday :-). Thanks for your input guys, much appreciated as always

There's an interesting article in National Club Golfer this month which busts some of the myths of golf balls. Can't remember them off the top of my head as I was just flicking through the copy at my parents' place yesterday, but it was quite interesting.
