Balls

Personally, I’ve been using the prov1x for the last year or so, mainly because a club fitter recommended it. I do like them, I like the feel, distance and the spin I get. However, I don’t like the price!

With that in mind I’ve been trying to wade through the mygolfspy ball test, and have taken a punt on srixon zstar xv. From what I can gather they give good distance and spin. £30 for a dozen on eBay, will see what happens!

Reading the bargains thread I’m kind of wishing I’d tried the Wilson triad now. Although the way I’m playing I’ll probably need to buy some more balls soon anyway!

I was using the Wilson Triad over winter. Partly because I like using a softer ball when it’s cold and partly because I don’t want to waste premium balls chopping it round a muddy course.

With the weather improving I switched to Pro V1X last week. What a difference. The ball feels more explosive off the driver face and longer off the tee. And approach shots were spinning more.

In winter the greens are soft, it feels like throwing darts and there is no benefit in extra spin. Now the greens are a little firmer it was noticeable how I could get the ball to hop and stop on little pitches.

Over the winter I was getting 2 or 3 yards of backspin with Chromesofts or similar balls.
A couple of weeks ago I hit one into a green and it just bounced and didn't stop...could still be going now.
I always keep a couple of Tour balls in the bag and they came straight out.
Swapped all the softies out last week.

I use Triads , what’s your swing speed , ball speed for your driver ect ?. I’m 61 so not as fast as I used to be , I put my data into ChatGPT and told it I use Wilson Triads and it said the is pretty perfect for me but we are always chasing that extra 10yrs 😂

Agree - Triads seem pretty optimal for me. The MGS testing suggests ProV1 would be slightly better - which I was surprised at as I always assumed they were for faster players. But I'm just never going to be paying 50 quid a box. Triads at 30 quid will do nicely. 😅 They still spin a bit more than other balls I've previously used.

Tried out the Seed SD-02 balls today that Mrs M got me. A Budget 4 piece Urethane ball so meant to compete with the bigger boys. First impressions are superb, felt so hot off the driver face with a really strong flight and carry. Felt really good off the irons as well with a nice “click” and some serious green side spin.

Will give them another go in the week at a different course but really enjoyed playing with it today and nobody else had them so was easy to identify my ball. Mrs M may have bagged a winner here by just doing something as a treat £30 a dozen is well priced.

I'm considering upgrading to a urethane ball later this season. Am playing with more loft on approach shots now. Still have three boxes split between Trufeel and AD333... Liked the Triad in the past!

Bridgestone BRX are £25 a dozen , £23 of you buy 2 dozen at clubhouse golf.

Used them the past few months and really like them.

You can't feel the difference between most golf balls - you can tell they sound different but this is you sensing them through your ears and not through your hands.

I play AD 333 as I got some free with my GPS subscription and won some more on Society Days.

I hear this a lot but to me it's like saying you can't taste the difference between different coffees, it's only the smell. Which while true we can only "taste" 5 different things, the smell is part of what we call taste.

So yeah maybe with a golf ball, it is the sound, but I think that sound, that sense contributes to what we call "feel". And if something "feels" horrible off the club because it sounds like hitting a beach pebble, then that is absolutely a reasonable position to hold

100mph swing speed with the driver, so not fast. I'm not very efficient with my driver, maybe 230 carry, I think my swing is a bit steep, but this works well for striking irons.

100mph is still a lot higher than most club golfers. So a higher compression ball will work with the driver and spin better on the irons. Triad would be a terrible choice at that speed in warmer months.

Either way: The AD333 just doesn't work for me at all. It feels like I'm hitting a ball of iron.
I still have two boxes of 12 balls each lying around here.

I've switched to the Callaway Supersoft—much softer, a completely different game! (y)

Love pro v1s but they’re just far too expensive for me a 10 cap who loves a massive block off the tee especially next to the trees and river on my course 😂

Got 2 boxes of tru feel then will probably get some lake provs off a mate at £1 a ball

I haven’t migrated to my summer ball yet which is a box of 2025 Triad , and sleeve of titleist PRO V1 from 2024.
I am currently using some Bridgestone E12 things as the AD333s I have are knackered. But the E12 is actually a good ball. It is low spin off the driver, quite stoppable unless it’s down wind on a down slope then it rolls on (😳🤣). But really firm off the putter face ( using currently a Yes Donna .. from the subs bench)
I have to be careful about ball purchases.. Mrs Harpo hasn’t a clue about the importance of a ball .. bit like me saying I think you have a similar top or outfit in the wardrobe
