Balls

One of the lads who plays off 5.8 was recommended:
1: Wilson Duo
2: Callaway Supersoft
3: Wilson Triad
4: Titleist Tru feel

All those you can get around £30 or less. He currently plays a TP5 as a TM fanboy but said he’s going to give a sleeve of Duo a go this weekend.
Really? I've always seen the Duo Soft as cannon-fodder for high handicappers, beginners and seniors. I'd be really surprised if he rates that ball if he normally plays TP5. Chalk and cheese.

I am not trusting these AI recommendations at all, they seem like nonsense based on very little to me.
So his verdict is in, been chatting with him this evening as he played the Duo this morning in his final round of his club eclectic comp.

His thoughts were: the Duo quite obviously felt and sounded different, he couldn’t discern any loss of distance with the driver, irons were going the same distance as his TP5 does with a slightly better ball flight and felt he had less movement left
/right in the air if anything was a little straighter than normal. Around the greens it was plenty receptive enough but maybe wanted just a tad more spin with chips and short pitches. Putting felt ok and rolled well on the greens, the proof was in his score. Last few rounds with his normal ball he’s been a couple over handicap around +8. Today with the duo he shot +4, hit more fairways and felt less anxious about potential lost balls and was compressing it better so was able to relax and just play.

His verdict: will he play them again? No 😂, but he has said he is going to stop using the TP5 as he’s had his eyes opened that just playing a premium ball because he’s a TM fanboy and his ego said he should doesn’t actually mean it suits his game, so is going to take a closer look at the Wilson Triad especially as it’s a 3 piece Urethane. Pretty much a successful day I’d say looks like he’ll save money in the long run and shot a lower score than his most recent rounds and is likely a small HC cut.

I just have to hope when we play Skins on Thursday he puts the TP5 on the tee and has a mare 😂

Suggest he tries the Tour Response. Been using it for a while now having moved from Pro V1. Performs just as well and cost around £15-19 less.

And he can still be a TM hoorbag.

I’ll let him know after Thursday 🤣

I’m currently down the rabbit hole looking at MGS reviews on the balls suggest for me. Q-Star might be out of the running everything im seeing doesn’t rate it to well off the driver and I’ve never liked other Srixon balls in the past ! But the Wilson staff model is coming out well !

Trying stuff is far better than reading reviews😉
And even then there are so many variables as to need about 20 rounds before you can even start to make an informed decision about any (slight) difference between how a ball affects your game. Just pick a ball that looks right and is th right price - most other things are just marketing hype, think AIM the ‘new’ line on one of the balls (forget which, thinking Titleist or TM)

To an extent I agree regarding the marketing hype. However I don’t agree with just picking one at the right price. People pay a lot of money for custom fit clubs to make sure they fit their game yet the one constant variable on every single shot we hit is the ball!

So for me it’s important to have the ball fit for the game as well. I’ve been down the rabbit hole so am biting the bullet and booking a ball fitting at North Hants at the end of the week. £25 for a full in fitting with GC quad data seems worth it to me.

Each to their own but I suspect you may be suffering from paralysis by analysis 😂

Not at all to be fair my bag set up shows I’m far from that 🤣

But if I can control one variable being the ball and want to get back down towards scratch next year (hoping ) I may as well do the one I’m ultimately going to buy the most of and spend on regularly £25 seems worth it👌

I will be interested to know how your fitting goes , how many different types of balls ect ?

The srixon zstar XV balls I ordered from eBay arrived and weren’t the ones pictured in the advert! The photo was of the latest variation, they sent the 2023 model, so I sent them back. Naughty buggers.

After reading all the stuff about Wilson staff on here, but still wanting to play something similar to the prov1x, I decided to take the plunge on the Wilson staff model x, which is apparently quite similar. Managed to find them on a 3for2 and also a 5% discount code, so they’ve ended up costing just over £27 per dozen. Looking forward to giving them a try.

TP5 is regularly at the bottom end of the list for distance in the MGS testing, so not a huge surprise he hasn't lost distance after moving away from it. Of course he loses a hell of a lot of spin going from that to the Duo. As Greig said, Tour Response would be a happy medium between the two of them.

Looks like Wilson are absolutely taking over the ball market, starting with this thread. 😄

Time to buy some shares?!

But in real life there's not much in it. I don't notice a drop off in distance when I switch from Pro V1 to TP5.

A major manufacturer just would not release a premium ball that travelled significantly less distance than its competitors. Distance is a huge characteristic.
