Ball marker not removed ball in play..learn everyday

This came about during society game and we have in place that if your not sure of a ruling if everyone in your 3/4 ball agrees to the outcome whether its right or wrong it stands and then it can be discussed later in the bar :)

Anyway..player placed his ball on the green and after few seconds it moved nearer the hole,so between them they agreed it should be replaced to original spot .....so they asked about it and a few were saying they done right and i said he should have played it from its new position as the ball was in play..but then i added thats if he had removed his ball marker but when looking through the rules its irrelevent if the marker had been removed or not the ball is in play once replaced ....which i didnt know:o

So now that i know the balls in play marker removed or not am i able to place my ball down then stand back to check alignment and go back to my ball and still move it? thats what ive always done with marker in place thinking its not in play till its removed.

Yes. As the marker is still in place and is marking the spot on which the ball lies, you may realign the ball.

Think about the preceding situation.
Your ball is on the green and in play. You mark it and it is still in play. How would you be able to lift and clean your ball if the rules didn't permit you lift a marked ball? 16-1b does just that.

There is a rule for just this situation. Play two balls under rule 3-3. A very handy rule.

Thx rulefan for reply and clarifying about repositioning marked ball,I've asked quite a few at our club about the ball moving after its been put back into play and surprised that alot said had to replace to original position...

We do play 2 balls only if the group is split on what the ruling is and the reason we try to sort it out as a 3/4 ball there and then is to keep things moving as we do play alot of private courses so don't want to upset members with slow play and more often than not are made welcome.

The problem is often a result of people having a different interpretation on the words you are using. You have used 2 forms of words here as an example with you opening post having a strong inference that the ball was at rest before it started moving than in this post.
If the ball is replaced and at reat before it starts moving the situation is as covered - if it's replaced but isn't properly at rest before it rolls away then it gets replaced.
How people interpret the situation will influence their response - as will their understanding (or otherwise) of the rules !

Finally there is the general rule that people will guess anyway even if they don't have a clue with regard to the rules.

Yeh fair point Duncan I understand what your saying and did make the point that the ball was at rest when asking the question and note to self will make sure I state exact wording through each post so as to not confuse things especially in the rules section 😊
Cheers

I was only picking your posts as an illustration of a point, not to make the point😊
People can pick up on words, context, and a lot of other things when giving an opinion on the rules. Some of its extremely relevant but some of it triggers an inappropriate response!
