For the last 3/4weks I have been suffering from lower back pain and obviously its affecting my swing.

I have rested it all week and done some strecthes every day (lie on back and roll right knee over past left leg). I keep myself fit running 3/4 times a week but I cant seem to shift it.

Anybody got any top tips i.e. Ibuprofen, chiropractor or the obviously rest!!

BAck pain is a bit of a minefield, problem is there are so many possible causes. If it's just a strain etc I don't think anything other than rest and ibuprofen will do it. Depends if it's a long term issue or one off strain I'd say.

I had problems for months, turned out to be a core strenght problem

I have a cyst inside my spinal chord which the hospital wont remove its in my lower back some days its as stiff as hell ,i use Ibuprofen gel to ease it off ,it works for me.

You havn't told us your age but, if you are no spring chicken (like me), I had bad back problems a couple of years ago and it turned out to be caused by arthritus of the hips. My advice is to see a specialist if it doesn't clear up soon. I spent a few hundred pound with an osteopath which was money wasted.

Thanks for the replys guys.

I have a gym at home with a treadmill, cross trainer, spinning bike and the most probable cause......a 5ft kick and punch bag!

It could also down to a bad swing as I have been hiting it a lot straighter lately due to snapping my left leg straight as I come through the ball.

Could be a million things really :D

You're obviously a highly tuned athlete unlike me - but a simple change can easily affect the back including snapping your leg straight - try to make it smooth rather than jerky there will then be less strain.

Voltarol or Ibuleve gel applied to the area before you go out can do wonders.

Stop carrying too, if you haven't already! :)

Carrying? I dont take a fire arm with me! Seriously I use a PowaKaddy.

Is Ibuleve gel better than tablets then?

I found it more effective and immediate. I could also take it out on the course and use if needed.

I then got a Tempur mattress and haven't had any back problems since! Touch wood. ;)

About 6 months ago I suddenly developed terrible lower back pain and could barely walk let alone swing a club. It has only just started to get better over the last month or so. I went to freedom back clinics in the end' it is not cheap but was definately worth it for me. They give a free consultation so nothing to lose by going. I also took dichlofenac both tablets and cream as ibruprofen was no where near strong enough. I now go once a month for a deep muscle massage (only £10) to keep my neck and upper back loose which keeps any strain off my lower back.

Hope you are better soon and swinging freely again.

Don't do back exercises for a start -they are to strenghten a healthy back not treat a damaged one and get a copy of "Treat your own back" by Robin McKenzie ;)

I get a nagging pain in the lowe part just above the right buttock which seems to come on every now and again for no reason, even if I haven't been playing or practicing. I just try and keep it warm (usually a hot water bottle onto the pain) and take some ibuprofen (anadin muscle/joint tablets work for me) and keep it loose. Don't know what is causing it but touch wood it hasn't got worse and stopped me playing yet.

PPE I've also had back ache since December. It has died down with the help of diclofenac.

I saw the quack and had 1 physio session , they got me to do some exercises to prove if there was any serious damage which there isnt thankfully.

I work in IT so often in the car or on a computer, these positions put most strain on your back so check your posture is good.

Also with me my injury coincided with a change to my swing in December when I purposely tried to swing with my back straighter so I think I put my back through something it wasnt used to doing. I didnt know it at the time but a few days later it hurt a lot and getting out of a chair wasnt easy!

You'd know if its serious apparently, people with real back problems find it hard to walk, get out of the chair, sleep, etc and are almost in pain all of the time.

You should see a doctor and get it checked out in any case.

BTW rest is not necessarily good advice, sometimes good to keep moving with some problems like this, when you're standing theres actually less strain on your back then sitting.

Great advice mate, thank you.

I do 35-40k miles a year in the car and slouch at my desk also. I was thinking that as I am relatively fit I should be ok, but with this new swing I am using muscles that I never have before by the look of it!!

I remember when I was 15 and and played for this football team and trained twice a week and was exceptionally fit, then the manager brought in his wife to do training who was an aerobic teacher, I could not walk for a week! :o

I had bad back pain and severe spasms, and was forced to hobble off the course two rounds in a row. First time i didn't rest for long enough, second time went to the docs, got some pain killers, and didn't play for about five weeks until the pain had gone completely. Rest is always a good idea, however frustrating it is.

Had the same problem a couple of times playing tennis, and i am sure it came from picking up tennis balls without bending the knees and just leaning over. Could be the same with teeing up the golf ball. You may have to tee up like a lady.

:D :D
