Are you embarrassed by your handicap?

I'll go along with others who say you have the game DelB, I remember playing with you at Castle Stuart and wondering how you were off 21 or whatever at that time. It's not necessarily just down to the shots though. It's a case of learning to play the course, to make best use of your strokes. If you can marry up good course/game management with good shotmaking then your handicap will tumble. No reason why it shouldn't

Stick in and enjoy Haddington

Not so much embarassed by my h'cap......more embarassed to be have such a shocking short game for that h'cap.

very embarrassed sometimes when playing attrociously then comes the question "so what handicap are you?" with a look on their face like I'd just asked to sleep with his wife:o

I'm embarrassed when I beat mine by more than 1 or 2 shots and also embarrassed when I can't get within 3 or 4 of it. I sometimes wonder how on earth I'm the handicap I am when I'm hacking it round without hardly a good shot.

The best I've ever felt about my handicap was playing in scratch team matches. Now it's only one of the lower divisions so we're not up against players near scratch, but it felt great knowing that no matter how well I played, no-one could moan about my handicap.

At my own course no. I feel I need my shots if I'm having an iffy round. But when I play other courses with new people its slightly embarrassing.
Like today, played a course I've never played before. Par'd every par 4 and only let myself down on the 5's and 3's.

My only real issue is players getting 2 shots on par 3's.

i was earlier in the season when sometimes i would have moments of genius that made me look like a bandit.

the best was a team match game i played at bonnybridge.it's a very easy 9 hole course imho and the guy i was against was off 5(apparently).

he started birdie, birdie, par, birdie to be 4 up after 4 against me.i had started par par,d bogey d bogey.

i asked him what he was playing off and he told me 5 and i think i was 8 at the time,i couldn't believe it.at that point i thought "yeah right"....and was wanting the match to be over.

i then played the golf of my life and was -4 for the remaining holes we played,it finished with me winning 3 & 2....

I can be at times like others have said.....
Iv played with the same 2 handicapper at my course about 10 times this season.....A nice chap sound out and his very words to me were.....

You dont hit the ball like a 16 handicap. And you do a hell of a lot of things right for someone thats only in their 3rd season........At times you hit it like a scratch golfer and to be fair i have to agree with him but there are always those incidents that raise there head with me at least a half dozen times a round where ill make some half assed attempt at propelling the ball forwards an make myself look like a complete hatchet man......

If i can minimise those shots then these are usually the rounds where i can play like a single figure golfer....At the moment though iv a bit of work to do...

...to which he then thought "8....YEAH RIGHT!"

it was funny because another player from our team was -2 for the holes they played and he was off 7 at the time.he still is,he plays terrible at callander g.c but for some reason he played all the team match games brilliantly......

we usually struggled for a team so our number 1 on the day would be much worse than their number 1 so we did well.most of the guys i was playing were atleast 2 or 3 shots better on paper.

Im not embarassed by my handicap, Id like to get it lower, dont get me wrong, but I feel it is a true measure of my "General" golfing ability.

I can play some great shots, and some great holes. But I cant do it all the time,

I can par a high SI hole to get 4 points, then score 7 on a par 3 for a blob.

I have never had a blob free round Even my best score of 87 included a blob
My average score is 93 against par of 70, so a handicap of 23 is spot on and will remain until I can improve my consistancy.

Its definately getting there

Embarassed....No. Work In Progress..... YES

Like Imurg I also get embaressed when I don't shoot anywhere near my handicap.
I only moved up 0.2 all year as I usually score around buffer at worst, but on bad days I would struggle to hit buffer if I was off 28.
I put this movement down to changing clubs this year as it took me a while to adjust to the tree lined fairways :o.

Forgot to add, Del I too have seen you play and know that if you manage to relax during medals you could be low teens by the time Machrihanish comes round.

I was embarrassed on Saturday when I nobbled my first tee shot 40 yds (it only went that far as it was downhill) into a bush :D I then played the next 14 holes in 3 over gross and finished with 36 points so some kind of redemption there.

Playing golf with a card in your hand is what holds a lot of people from reaching their potential. I call it your mental handicap

my handicap is about right,

i occasionally get delusional that it should be lower after a good run of holes

watching a video of my swing or a medal round normally brings me back to reality

not embarrassed, just annoyed with mine as I have had plenty of rounds around 90 and 6 under 90 which would = a hc around 20, still off 28 though as always blow it in comps, started level par gross after 5 holes the other week then went 8, 8, 9.... after that I couldnt give a crap and just went through the motions :(

I have had 1 runner up and also plenty of comments about how I shouldnt be off 28... but I am so until I get my game together I will continue to be

no disrespect gibbo but are you sure you really need stiff shafts playing off 28, that cud be half your problem, but keep chipping away and you will get there

but tim you play a proper course most other courses you go to you could easily play to 14 or even 12
