Are you embarrassed by your handicap?

Definitely. For the amount of work I've put in I feel I should be lower. I know where the issues lie and work is in hand to rectify the failing facet. Ball striking wise, I've been hitting it as well as I have in many years and even Hawkeye has been surprised and is actualy looking forward to getting some support from his partner in matches for a change.

I've often been told I'm a better player than my handicap and it has gone wrong. I've striven too hard to get to goals such as single figures or tried too hard in events with the usual outcomes. I was embarrassed especially this year to touch 14 but a win the first week I was there sorted that out. Now I play to the handicap I am (and have proved in GM events I can play to it and win) and if I can translate the new ball striking skills into a competitive round starting on Sunday then I might get it down (no Homer - positive for 2012 - I WILL get it down) to a level I think it should be at. On the other hand if I play rubbish then as long as I'm enjoying my golf I'm not attaching any emotional label to the handicap and it'll rise or fall as my game dictates

The flex of your shaft has nothing to do with handicap level

maybe not ,but surely a regular shafted driver is alot easier to hit and alot more forgiving than a stiff one, i dont no many high handicappers that swing it above 90mph and if they are they should be slowing it down abit and trying to concentrate on hitting the fairway

Definitely embarrassed that my handicap isnt lower, feel I should / could be a lot better. A month back after injury and the driving and irons are about a 28 handicap standard, only my chipping and putting seem o be working and getting me round bang on handicap.

Going to get a couple of lessons booked this week and try to get back on track.

Extremely. Although the first hole at my home course is always my worst hole, the rest is very simple and I never take advantage of it. I am starting to get really frustrated as I play every day I can and have quite a few lessons yet I still continuously duff, fat and thin shots.
Still, I enjoy it nonetheless

No, not embarrassed at all. It is what it is.

I'm capable of birdieing and parring every hole on my course, but obviously not in one round.
When I play well and get called a bandit it doesn't worry me as I know I play in all the comps, so it's a true handicap.

I've heard it said before that only 10% of Amateur golfers score below 100.

So I'm PROUD to be in that 10%, not embarrassed.

I can be but I hate the "I'm off 26" when playing people for the first time, I feel like a numpty!! Played well today though so there is hope. Playing partners gave me the usual as above of your hcp will drop big this season. I hope so it's the hardest I've ever worked on my game to be honest! Driving was on today, chipping good, putting good and irons below average overall with the odd flash of v good including my first birdie on my 2nd par 4 Si 3!

I totally agree with regards the stiff shaft, although I have been hitting it well of late so maybe as its a made for shaft it probably isnt that stiff. It was a bargain off ebay so may well pop to AG and try some others in reg.

After a 1st year of spending a shedload on gear I am of the mindset of get used to what I have got until I improve enough to get proper fitted

My home course is not an easy course. Its a par 72 where SSS stays high.
I've played many courses where its basically a drive and short iron/wedge to the green without much danger from hazards. I know my handicap would be much lower if I was a member there.
That is why I personally think your handicap is only relevant to your home course.

No, but i used to be.

I just accept it now as ive always put my cards in and tried to score well enough to be cut each comp. I play every weekend comp and most midweek comps so i am trying to improve and score well.

I'm honest with myself and when i play so i know its only a matter of time before i start getting cut.

Don't think anyone should be embarrassed by a proper h/cap, if you play comps regular you should be able to score 4, 5 , 6 shots better than h/cap if you have a good day, the flip side is on a bad day you might be 10 over h/cap, margins might be lower/higher depending on your h/cap, i've based these number on myself playing off 10

What is the SSS of the blue tees?

I'm embarrassed that I don't have an official one. It is often a little awkward..
