Are Footjoy cutting quality?

Question for everyone, how do you keep your golf shoes ?

Wash or air gun the worst of the kiech off of the soles, wipe down any residual mud with a damp cloth and then the occasional polish and skoosh of water proofing spray.

They live in the kitchen, near to, but not underneath, the radiator.

Question for everyone, how do you keep your golf shoes ? Are they cleaned, aired and dried before being put into storage or are they left to moulder in the boot of the car until next use ?

I've a pair of dryjoys that must be almost four years old. Granted, I use lighter shoes in the summer, but these dryjoys see the worst of the early season, late season and winter conditions. I clean them, dry them and treat them and they still go on and on. I've a pair of High Tec shoes I use in summer and do the same with them, they are into their third season. With the cost of golf shoes nowadays, I look after them as I'm certainly not looking to shell out £100 every season on shoes.

PS Greenjoys are excellent in mid winter for keeping the feet dry

Mine are always cleaned, dried and polished after every round and stored on a shelf in the wardrobe until needed. I even remove the studs and clean them and the soles every couple of weeks as I find if you never take them out, they are almost impossible to remove when you want to change them.

When i first started to play i had a pair of Addidas that were awful, the Nike tour and they were like sponges.

I then tried my first pair of FJ, which were the LT model and they were great had them for almost 3 years without any trouble and stayed waterproof most of that time. i then had two pairs of Dryjoys both leaked straight away, then some contour for winter with the boa lace which i still have, but they let water in withing a few months. Ive now a pair of myjoy icons from a Prize in the mag and if it had not taken AG and FJ 3 months to make them they would have gone straight back as they leaked in water the first time i wore them in light drizzle. Also had a a pair of XPS as a prize at the club, but the sole split within a few months.

All these shoes had been looked after, dried properly and polished.

The sole splitting on the XPS-1 is a problem. My first pair that I won in the GM comp the other year split within a couple of months and were replaced by FJ. The current ones are a year old and I noticed at the weekend that they are going the same way. I would send them back but I'm not sure I want another pair so was going to get a pair of FJ Sports as the ones I have have been fine.

I might wait and see if FJ respond to MikeH about this thread though.

I'm certainly not so conscientious but balance that with the lower expectation of their life, but, 5 months wear and a soaked foot in dewy conditions is too far to accept.

I don't disagree and wasn't suggesting cleaning them would increase their life. I just do it as I hate dirty shoes and it can't hurt. Frankly, If I didn't clean them at all I'd exepct them to last more than 5 months.

I am surprised by how many people are reporting multiple issues with different models of Footjoy. This company used to be considered as a top quality golf shoe, but it looks like they have gone down the Adidas route of cheap and cheerful with plenty of new styles to choose from.

I'm sure somebody from Footjoy will be along soon to deliver the standard corporate message and guarantee that the manufacturing process is stricter than ever using the best quality materials available.

We'll I've just spoken to American Golf and even though my shoes have been there for over 3 weeks waiting to be collected Footjoy haven't bothered their arse to get them.

I'll be interested to hear what Mike comes back with after speaking to them

Acushnet returns have always been next day whenever I have needed them through my pro. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that this may be an AG problem rather than FJ.

Yeah that could very well be the case, I only have the word of the sales assist that I spoke to on the phone.

I am going to email Footjoy as well and ask what the hold up is.

I bought a pair of Aql in may. I wont lie I have played probably 40 rounds of golf in them however my feet were soaking after 6 holes today and the sides are coming away from the soles.

I will add that I keep my shoes in my locker and only clean them with the air blower and wipe them over after a round. But I would still expect them to be in decent order if im honest.

I forgot to take pictures today but I will email them with pictures on Thursday and see what they say.

Chris, I firmly believe you are right. I wear FJ Contours and they have lasted at least 2 years before leaking however, last winter I went through about 4 pairs as they started to leak on about the second or third round! (almost a pair a week!) Thankfully we had a dry summer so have had the same pair for a few months now but I fear that they will leak as soon as I get out in wetter conditions - hope I am wrong as they are the most comfortable style of golf shoes I have tried.

Same experience Anthony - I am on my third replacement pair of Contours this year - one leaked with laces, the other without laces. New pair has laces. I also have a new pair of Dryjoys that I haven't used yet but bought last year so out of warranty - the only other pair of shoes I had to take back in the past was... Dryjoys!! I won't be rushing back to buy Footjoys again - only ever bought them (well twice) when half price and because other people seemingly rated them and I hoped my experience was isolated - I might be revising my opinion on that front!

As posted previously, my Dry Joys have been tremendous but based on this amount of negative feedback I will definitely be expanding my search when I replace them. Pick always liked the wider fit of Footjoys. I have bought some Ecco boots recently and they are very comfy so might look at their range. What recommendations in the Ecco range?

I bought a pair of sports with the boa laces in a end of June.
they leaked after no more than a month the replacements have been worn twice this week and my feet were wet after both rounds so it's back to my nikes for today's game

My missus treated me to a pair of Traditional Footjoys from the My Joy range, so I chose the colours and got 'Duff' on each heel. One year on and the leather on the heel, toe and sides (purple) are 'rubbing away' - the colour is disappearing. The shoes were £130, needless to say I'm extremely disappointed that the finish is rubbing off. The comfort is ok, not as good as my Nike or Addidas pair. Out of the 1 year warrenty now (ended July) so can't go back to them for a new pair really. I wouldn't buy another pair.

Hi all
as promised here are some thoughts from Russell Lawes at FJ in repsonse to the issues that forumers have highlighted

FJ's Comments

We would like to thank everyone who has posted a comment relating to FJ shoes. As you would expect we pride ourselves on the quality of our shoes and never like to hear dissatisfaction from golfers. There have been many points highlighted in this thread that we at FJ would like to clarify.

1 Year Limited Waterproof Warranty
All FJ shoes come with a 1 year limited waterproof warranty. In the event of your shoes leaking we would honour the warranty and replace your shoes free of charge. When returned shoes arrive at the factory we conduct rigorous testing to ascertain where a leak is coming from. If any type of pattern occurs a further investigation will take place to eradicate the issue.

2 Manufacturing
We own our own shoe manufacturing facility. We have by no means outsourced this aspect of our business. Golf is our sole passion and we invest heavily in the manufacturing process of our shoes to ensure they are produced to the best standard possible.

3 Quality Control - The benefit of owning our own manufacturing facility is that FJ employees are the ones checking the quality of the shoes that we produce. We produce our shoes in pairs to ensure the look and performance of the leather is compatible in the left and right shoe. Furthermore our shoes go through a rigorous testing procedure after manufacture to check for defects or any potential leakages. Our return rate of shoes is currently around 0.5%, so although we accept that from time to time a few issues may occur, we are definitely not taking our eye off the ball when it comes to standards of producing FJ golf shoes.

4 Correctly Fitted Shoes
We by no means will ever shirk away from negative comments and understand that occasionally a small issue may occur with a golfer’s shoes. When we recieve returned pair of shoes, as a result of leaking or when the sole may be coming away from the upper, nine times out of ten we will be able to ascertain that the issue has stemmed from the shoe being incorrectly fitted for the foot. This may sound like we are passing the buck but we can assure that we aren't. As you can imagine, golf shoes are our primary focus and as a result we invest heavily into research and development of shoes in order to make them the best in the industry.
Part of our research has uncovered that in excess of 80% of golfers are wearing incorrectly fitted shoes, in most cases the shoe being too large for the foot. We are continuing to work with our retail partners to ensure that professional shoe fitting is carried out to ensure the correct shoe size is established before a purchase is made.
We have many golfers comment to us that they are a size 9, always have been and always will be. This is in fact not the case. Our feet change size/width over time. We all know that golf is a performance sport and a vital element to a golfers performance is being stable during the swing. A shoe that is too large for the foot will cause endless problems to the golfer as well as the shoes longevity.
A shoe that is too large creates excess space that allows the foot to excessively move during the swing. We appreciate that movement is required for walking comfort but excessive movement reduces the power that a golfer is able to transfer throughout the golf swing.
This movement also causes friction that in turn wears away the inner section of your shoes; the excess room also creates stress points on the shoes due to over flexing of either the sole or the leather. It is this continuous flexing which deteriorates the life of a golf shoe. A shoe which is worn in every day life is not put through the same pressures that a golf shoe is put through and it is this message we are trying to communicate to all golfers. Wearing correctly fitted shoes will not only help performance but it will also help maintain the life of your shoes.
To further highlight our commitment to ensuring golfers are wearing the correct size golf shoe, we have heavily invested in the widest size range available in the golf shoe market. Whether your feet are extra narrow, or extra extra wide, maybe you have a different size left foot to your right, FootJoy has the size profile to ensure you are wearing the best shoe which delivers in both performance and comfort.

Many Thanks

Russell Lawes FootJoy Marketing Manager
