The iPad has gone on sale in the UK today...

I've just been comparing prices on the apple US site with those on the companies UK site and we'll be paying a premium of easily over £150 for any of the models when exchange rates are taken into consideration.

So we're ripped off again.

When you see how much each model costs, it's an expensive toy when compared to the likes of a top end net book or even a bottom range iBook.

The pricing is interesting, but I think sluggers's maths are out.

The 64Gb Wifi version is $699, or £599 ($869).

The US price doesn't include sales tax, which is average around 6%.

If you compare the US price before sales tax with the ex-VAT UK price (£509 or $738), the difference is about $40, or £27.

Pointless style-over-substance device that absolutely epitomises Apple under Jobs.

Want an iPhone that's 4 times the size but doesn't actually make phone calls whilst simultaneously restricting your Internet access and maintaining that other products are rubbish despite clearly being not?

Then get yourself an iPad.

...and get yourself a big tattoo of 'Sucker' to put on your forehead while you're at it.

The sooner the world stops going gooey over everything Apple make and start challenging them to make excellent products first and excellent design second, the better.

Although I suppose in the modern world a range of products that shout about how beautiful they are and exaggerate about what they actually do (Sequences in this rant have been shortened...) when there are other better, but perhaps less attractive, products elsewhere, with less of a tendency to self-promote, is disturbingly apposite.

A Windows user, I imagine. And bitter, too.

I don't have an iPad but I do have Macs and an iPhone, and they are much better products than the Windoze stuff.

Have you seen or used an iPad? If not, then your opinion is really not worth too much.

Apple is now worth more than Microsoft and Steve Jobs could buy Newcastle United with his small change, so I think he is doing all right.

Ha. At least they are played by some decent players. Unlike Srixon which is not even played by most of the Tour staff.

And Wilson fybrids? Do they come in a ladies flex?

My 4yr old daughter can open my ipod touch, scroll through to "her" apps and have fun.

It took me less than 5 minutes to teach her how.

That is genius in terms of design.

Might not be Mr Jobs who did it but somebody's got to bounce around on stage.

Without Apple, Microsoft would suck even worse than it does. Every thing needs competition. Imagine if Mac had not existed. Microsoft stuff would be even worse than it is. Hard to imagine, but it would be.

I used to have a Mac back in 1989. One of those strange desktop cabi et looking ones. Have to say it was flawless, though damn expensive when compared to a pc. But it was the ui which made it better than the pc.

Windows os was always playing catch up with the ui in my view.

A few years later out comes the Apple Newton. The grand daddy of all portable PDA's, iPhones, windows mobile and android.

Apple have always been way ahead of it's time, but their products were always a little pricy. Keeping them from mass appeal.

ITunes was a great idea, but the likes of Spotify have got iTunes on the back foot as I see it.

As for the ipad. As the iPhone has, needs to 'mature'. Ie, gain a USB port, have the ability to print and be able to handle a word processor and spreadsheet. (TBH, I don't know if gen 1 ipads do or not!?). Only then will I consider one.

The only bug bear is that the website software is pc based, otherwise I'd have another mac after all these years.

I whole heartedly disagree with the extremely negative posts above I think they are much better in design, function, reliability and security.the only advantages of pcs I can see are: compatibility, price and ease of upgrade. I have must also be a mug because I preordered an ipad a few weeks ago and I just can't wait I think the money is very resonable for what it does.
Each to their own.

I've always used Windows PC's. I have an iPhone and think it's brilliant, everything just works so well you don't even think about how well it works while you're using it.

What really grates me is the restrictions that Apple put in place to try to tell you what you can and can't do with something you've paid a hell of a lot of money for.

I dont really see the need for the iPad, but as an iMac user, all I can say is that I wouldnt EVER go back to Windoze. Period.

The iPhone is great, my son has one, but for me, my Blackberry is better.

Its about deciding what the best tool for the job is, surely ? Ignore the hype, and the marketing, and analyse what you need before you buy ?

That said, I DONT need an iPad.
