Looking to book a round for next Saturday,
eliminating the numerous GreenFree courses that say 'not Weekends' or 'only when it's dark' or that no longer accept them, leaves a limited range of options that we haven't played previously (don't want to go too far afield, busy later).

Redbourn is first choice but I need a standby,

all I know of Chalgrave is that is has one of the worst web pages in golf.

I used to be a member at Chalgrave.....not in the same league as Redbourn i'm afraid!!!
It's an ok track but nothing special.

Your obviously very close to me, my home course is Dunstable Downs which is in excellent nick at the moment!

If your looking for cheaper you could do a lot worse (Chalgrave) than Stockwood Park Muni.....the only draw back there is the 5 hour round!

Would Lamerwood not let you on, i've played there dozens of times and it's always virtually empty, smashing course too!

I'm in St Neots, my mate in Welwyn.

I happen to have a GreenFree voucher that runs out at the end of the month, so we were looking at those.
Stockwood is on the list to play sometime, but as a muni there's no rush (which is not a put-down of munis).

I'm not sure about Lamerwood as it's new to me, looking it up now.

Lamerwood is great, very Woburnesque in my opinion, it's Japanese owned and always in excellent condition.
Two things though, the greens are not really fast but are very undulating so i guess that's why they don't shave em right down. And being Japanese owned, food and drink in the club house is very expensive!!! But if a green fee is all your after then fill yer boots!

Welwyn's nice played there a couple of times a few years ago.

Let me know how you get on?

my mate wanted to keep the costs down, and I wanted to use the GreenFree before it expired. Redbourn only take vouchers Mon-Thurs, so it will be Chalgrave.

Faldo, played Chalgrave Saturday.

I can see what you mean about the course though tbh I think the course is let down badly by the infrastructure; it actually plays pretty well and is challenging in the wind, at least at my level. (Of course my opinion may be coloured by the fact that I beat my mate for the first time (net par to his +2) and have got my h/cap below his. (Rob's played for a lot longer but just does not like competitive golf, so hasn't had that to drive his game. He hits a mean iron though.)

As to Chalgrave, first impressions aren't good with the access being a rutted, badly maintained track leading to insufficient parking, and it does get busy. Poor pro shop, no course guides. Overall a bit shabby and over priced at £34 at the w/end but fair enough if you have a GreenFree. The course deserves better.
