My club weekly comp is called a string competition. Funny thing is, I cant find one person at my club that knows what it is. I've heard all sorts of ways it played! Anyone?

We have one in the big greedie at our place called the Claw. The ideal is you get a yard of string equivalent to your handicap (so I get 11 yards) and you can move your ball for the cost of that distance in string.

So does everyone play off 0 but with longer pieces of string? Can you go closer to the hole?

As Homer says. We played it as a mixed comp and got the length according to the team handicap. We found it best to use it on putting as it lasts longer and saves missing the shorter putts that cost dear

That's about the size of it. But you cut the string to the lengths you need until you run out. So you might cut a foot to get out of the clag or 2 yards to get out of a bunker. You can use as much as you want in one go but once you're out, you're on your own.

Not sure what you do if you're off +2

Yes we do it on Tuesday nights from time to time. It's great fun and really gets people thinking when it's best to use the string.
I might do it next Tuesday as I think it'll be a quiet rollup.

So if you have a 4 foot putt for a birdie you can put it in the hole and trim 4 foot of string off. Its stableford format so do players tend to come in higher or lower than 36? Sounds like this favours the lower handicap. I'd need a fishing reels worth!

no, you play off your normal handicap.

(and yards seems rather generous - I seem to remember it being feet last time I played!)

it's amazing how much you can 'save' with even 5ft of ball moving in a round.

Your "friends" get to move you 2 yards into the clag in one go, or put your holed putts 6" away on 12 separate occasions...... :(
