Any tips on keeping a smooth tempo?

I find metronomes really annoying to use because in so hard to sync your swing in with because of the continous beeps. If I do test my tempo I just go for backswing: 1...2...3..., then downswing: ...1.
The only thing I would just be concerned about on my tempo is not to fast on the backswing and not to quick on the transition to downswing.

GW has an article on tempo this month.
Apparently all the great players have the 3:1 backswing to downswing ratio. Even the quicker swingers like Nick Price still keep to this ratio.
When Norman imloded at the '96 Masters his tempo ratio went from 3:1 in the first 3 rounds to 2.5:1 (or thereabouts) in the 4th. He lost his tempo and lost the Masters.
I've tried this at the range.
Count 1, 2, 3 to the top of the backswing and then 4 to impact. It does work, I was getting a much better contact.
So no matter how fast you swing, as long as you keep the 3:1 ratio going you should make a decent contact with the ball.

I found the video below where Annika Sorenstam is talking about tempo & what she was saying was similar to what was said above, count to 3 on the backswing then to 3 again on the swing itself. Please don't attack me seeing as it's on a rival website :)
