Any strange rules?

My club is fairly liberal in it's rules. We're not manacled by stuffy "Gentleman's Club" rules such as jacket and tie in the clubhouse, polo type shirts are allowed, it's not required you change your clothes after your round in order to enjoy your clubhouse pint.
The course rules I suspect are identical to the majority of clubs up and down the country, ie shirts tucked in, no trainers, jeans and tee shirts etc.

Has your club any strange or obscure rules that must be complied with?

It has changed now, but you used to be allowed in the dining room in shorts, you could buy food, and eat it provided you didn't sit down. If you wanted to sit down, you needed trousers.

The other one was having to wear knee lent6h socks with shorts. Why bother with shorts at all?

Its the shorts one that always makes me laugh.

Most of us, if we really admit it, do not look good in shorts. All of us - bar none - look completely ridiculous in shorts with knee length socks. Who on earth thought that one up, how long ago, and what were they on at the time?

Personally I don't wear shorts much except around the house in the hottest weather. Never on the Golf Course. Even with the socks it looks untidy to me - too casual. if you're going to have a dress code then shorts are a no-no in my book.

I just get the picture of 4 old guys in their shorts and socks showing all the things that we really don't want to see and thinking they look respectable.

I believe that I read this in GM, if not another magazine, but at a course in Australia, if a Kangaroo is struck by a golf ball you must replay the shot with a one shot penalty.

I always find it strange that people can put on a tie with the shirt they've played golf in and the same trousers, and then a blazer that the barman found for them in lost property and they are deemed acceptable.....but when you make an effort and shower, change into a nice pair of trousers and a shirt you do not meet the dress code....

Were allowed denims in the tv lounge but not the main lounge?

Most denims now are far more fashionable than they were 20 years ago and a dam sight smarter than some of the guys who walk off the course and straight upstairs for a session in the same gear.

Personally I see no reason to ban demin at all in golf clubs as long as it's not ripped and been worn previously to change the oil in your car lol. Dress for the century we are in, not back in the 1800's.

Turnberry, Gleneagles and all the big establishments have no issue with denim, so why should our small local clubs?

After 6pm a jacket and tie has to worn in the bar and you cant go in in worn golf clothes.

Meaning i have to pack enough clothes for a long weekend just to have a bevvy its not ideal

I couldn't be a member of your club, far too strict for me. If they want the members to spend money behind the bar they should be allowed to wear what they want, and not have to pack a suitcase to be suitably dressed to have a pint.

Andi, I bet the course is great to play though? Spoiled by these outdated and absurd house rules.

I dont think its a case of out dated rules as I have only had to wear collar and tie at two clubs and one of those was for special prize giving events. Most clubs I have come across in 30 or more yrs have been quite reasonable for dress code. I dont think date is an issue I think its purely attitudes of club memberships that create stuffy dress codes. I think if anyone is smart and clean they deserve to be treated respectfully by all. Ive seen some incredibly scruffy gits in slacks, collar, tie and blazer over the years, enough to know that it cannot be smartness and cleanliness that these stuffy rule makers are looking for. I think there are limits though, a sweaty golfer in baggy shorts, polo shirt with colour changes under armpits is asking too much.

When you look at Golf/Golf clubs ask yourselves what kit is promoted in bulk, what kit is promoted by pro's, what kit do we see the most of etc.

Collar, tie and blazer are on the list at few golf clubs and those that do sell them dont sell that many. If your going to have dress codes at least have golf dress codes for golfers, not undertakers, or members of the uniformaty club :p

I can wear jeans in the bar but then it's not the clubs bar. If, however, I attend a golf club function in the same bar, then it's jacket and tie but you know that going in so no complaints.
