I have a few playable hickorys that I hit some balls with from time to time.

Good article in Bunkered Mag [am I allowed to say that on here] where Gullane pro Alisdair Goode played a match with hickorys against a single figure club player.
I think he went round No 3 in 74 and lost on the last.

Yes read that with interest.

I have twice played at Musselburgh Old in a Hickory Golf Day and bloody hell they are tough to use!

Makes using current equipment easy,I have to say I did not enjoy it it was so tough but if this was what we still used we would know no different!

Hickory, is sooooo last year.

I need a firmer shaft, so have bought some nice new redwood shafts.

20 years ago, I bought one for about a quid in a car boot dale (it was probably and only 5 iron).

It had a felt wrap for a grip (which was nailed on at the top, a dimpled face. I used to use it as a chi*per around the green, it was great. Sadly stolen from the car.

What sort of distance do you get out of say a 7 iron companied to your own 7? What other issues are there other than distance. I think I would quite like to play a round with them...

I have a MacGregor of St Andrews 5 iron. It has the word five engraved on the sole rather than a number and like Liverbirdie has a wrap grip (leather on this one) that is pinned top and bottom with a small nail. Dimpled face and is so hard to hit.
I am always afraid that I am going to snap the shaft with a full swing.
Inherited this from my father-in-law for my wee boy.

Irons are fine, the woods are a nightmare if you have a fast swing speed. I learnt pretty quick you have to stand massively open and slide across the ball to avoid a horrendous hook!

Your father-in-law didn't rob it from a white cavalier mk.2 from Brackenwood municipal car park around 1994 did he? Can I also have my Sam torrance 50" putter back also? I'll let him off with the Bee gees CD, as didn't admit to that on the list of items stolen.

There is no limit of statute with regards to theft of macgregor cleeks, as far as I know.

A 2 shot penalty for handling of stolen equipment (per round) also for you!!!

The Bee Gees CD was what made him give it up... (the whole game that is, we had to put him in a home you know!)

played in a hickory match today, love it, real challenge to the thought process of how to play. what club says makes little difference all about playing what feels right.

shock wearing a jacket and tie, but them's the rules. everything must be authentic;)

you have to use clubs no later than the 1930's i think.

can't wait for my next game
