Ill probably end up getting a spurk mat but are there any alternatives as im not keen on the nearly £30 price tag .

Need a mat with spikes to give it that stability as they very rarely have the chance to get the mowers out on the fairways during the recent very wet winters

I had a pretty heavyweight Callaway mat that was good.
Bought a spurs last winter, absolutely excellent.
Would recommend the short “grass” version.

I have found an off-cut piece of good quality artificial grass works well, even seen others using a piece of carpet or if you really want a spurk there are plenty of “knock off” versions on the chineses shopping sites (Temu or AliExpress), really no need to send £30.

Once you have tried the likes of a spurs, a mouldy old piece of carpet does not come close!

Think Sky Golf must be reading the forum, just seen an advertisement for Spurk 🤪
I was just about to say the same. I got one when they first came out, in fact so many people with my postcode bought one that Mr Spurk sent one to my (local) club, so the Pro could lend it to people. True to form, he didn't tell anyone.

I bought a second one as I fancied that there wouldn't be much of a market for them and I decided to stockpile. What do I know for as you say here they are being advertised on Sky.

Spurk is miles ahead of any other mat there brilliant. Played with players who have used a lot of different cheaper mats and everyone that’s had a go of my spurk has ended up buying one.

It literally shouldn't matter what kind of mat you have.....if you hit the ball first and then the mat the ball will travel the same. I have seen some people really give the cheaper ones like I use a good whack and send them flying....hasn't happened to me. Worst I've done is knock it a foot or so. Granted.....I have a short cord with a carabiner on it to attach to the bag.....probably helps keep it from going anywhere.

Sorry, I wasn’t suggesting anything of the sort, I was just suggesting an alternative that doesn’t cost £30.
My last club required mats in winter. Originally I used a bit of artificial garden turf, the benefits of working next door to a friendly carpet seller 😄. I never quite trusted it, too much movement as soon as the club made contact. Another player suggested getting some hard backing for it so I got some hard plastic, it was actually a scrap bit of interlocking tile, cut it, stuck it on. Definitely improved it and the cost remained at £0 😄. At that point, very little difference between my put together bit of kit and a Spurk mat.

I hate to be a bummer person......but in the past you could only use "approved" winter golf mats. Some were deemed icky and not ok to use. Do they still "approve" legal winter golf mats?....or have they relaxed the rules and you can hit off anything? If so....this Frankenstein golf mat (as impressive as it is) might not meet the requirements. Golf is full of "requirements".......

We were just told that we needed a mat. Could have been a bit of carpet as far as I'm aware. It just needs to protect the fairway. I could well be wrong but as my current place doesn't require mats, I don't care anymore 😂.

As it happens, the only difference between my hybrid and the official, 'sold golf mats', is the spikes underneath. Mine didn't have any so even more fairway friendly ;)

Newport is using them for the first time from 1st Nov to end January.

This was introduced without reference to the membership. There will be a riot at the November SGM. 😆😁

Club is providing the mats, I wonder what they'll be like.

I've only ever used fairway mats once. Not overly looking forward to the experience

Oh man.....how the standards have slipped. First they let people into the clubhouse in running shoes......what's next, this?
