I just wanted to share this mildly strange thing that happened to me yesterday afternoon. I went to the club to do some practice but since it was such a nice day I decided to go for 9 holes in the sun. As I was approaching the tee a chap calls over from the practice green and asks if he can join me. It was a guy I knew and I explained I was only playing 9 holes for a bit of practice but he was welcome to join me.

We hadn't discussed playing a friendly match or anything like that and all I wanted was to try to find my swing but as I am lining up me first tee shot he asks my handicap so I reply with "8, but you wouldn't believe it the way I am playing". He then says, "you have to give me 4 shots then". I thought nothing of it, hit my tee shot onto the green and we got on our way. As the holes went on, I realised he was actually competing against me :confused:

On the second tee he tells me he gets a shot on that hole and does the same on the 7th. He would also tell me his score if he had putted out before me and say things like "you need this for a half". It didn't bother me, in fact I found it mildly amusing that he was trying to compete against me and was using little mind games while I was going along completely unconcerned about his score, my score or the result of our "match".

After we holed out on the 9th I thanked him for the game and as it turns out, I beat him 1 up :D

All very strange...

Ha ha your a marked man Mike they wana have it to say beat you ..

id wreck his head by practice chipping and putting , playing 2 balls etc .. if i was going out for practice , i would practice

A player from my old club was like that. First time I played with her and after 9 holes her friend joined us and asked "how's it going" and she replied "I'm 1 up"! I did suggest if we were playing a match then it would be nice if she told me...went on to "win" the next few holes just to make a point!!

I've also had it when playing as a pair - "I was...over gross on the front and you were..." :confused:

Well I never enter the knockouts so maybe I'm a bit of an enigma :D

I did hit a few extra chips and putts on a couple of holes but it turns out I was hitting it better than I have for weeks so I didn't feel the need to hit any extra long shots.

Glad to hear you're out of the dip. Should I get my cash on your for the Stone Cup or just to take the cash tomorrow. You are definitely an enigma. I can't fathom you out and I partner you.

what a coincidence- mate called me last night and said he joined up with a single last night and had a decent match against a guy with a lower handicap- he said the bloke played more than 1 ball sometimes therefore losing the hole, he said he doen't think the guy knew that. They only played 9 and my mate was 3 up due to the 'extra' shots.

He was over the moon as he's never beaten a single fig handicap guy before. He said he's going to lay in wait at the practice ground again and see if he can repeat it with him.

:rolleyes::whistle:

I wouldn't say I was out of the dip yet, keep your money firmly in your pocket for now!
