The more I read worst car you have ever owned the more I am reminded of cars that I had owned that I had completely forgotten about.

There seems to be a broad pattern.

Cheap piece of second hand crap
Decent condition in a more sensible car
Something cooler but with too small an engine to match the looks
Something nice and quick (peak car ownership)
(Gets married)
Something sensible and practical that can carry gold clubs without taking the driver out
(Has kids)
Estate or People carrier x 2 or 3
(Kids leave home)
Middle age crisis car
Late middle age sensible car again
Motorised shopping trolley
Do you have any space for the electric trend in there? And there must a a ‘full generation’ driving the Prius as well, even if here nobody would own up to it ;-)

Think in my life I have owned just 5 cars.

Mini 1000 (1985-1988)
Vauxhall Vectra SRi 120 (1997-2001)
Renault Laguna Estate (2001-2005)
Peugeot 407 Estate (2009-2013)
Peugeot 508 Estate (2013-date)

The gaps were largely filled with company cars...

1990 Citroen BX17 Estate
1990 Ford Sierra
1994-1997 Ford Sierra Sapphire
2005-2009 Ford Mondeo Estate

BMW 318i was my first car when I was back home.

First car I ever had here was a D reg Ford Fiesta which I bought for £50 in 2003 odd. Simplest engine ever. No trouble at all with that. It was the electrics that eventually gave out in 2007ish.

Then had the Focus C Max for a long time up to 2016. It served a purpose with the family.

2016 to early 2017 was the Ford Ranger
I had a VW Amarok for about 6 months.
Since Sept 2017 I have had the Mitsubishi Barbarian but that is due for a change now

Telsa bringing out the model 2.. under 20,000 dollars . That's going to be a game changer

If we are going to go all electric in this country a Tesla at even under £20K is going to be miles outside the pockets of a very large section of society. A quick look down my road and I see lots of cars in the under £10k bracket with just a couple of new cars.

Buying or leasing?
The first Nissan Leaf cost around £30k and had a range of 80-90 miles
The MG5 is £19,800 with a range of over 200 miles.
A Ford Fiesta 1.0T is £21k

My daughter for instance bought her last car for £3500 and ran it until it nearly fell apart the replacement is a similar value car. There must be millions of people in this country in the same situation.

But will they ever get down to the sort of prices that say a pensioner on a basic state pension plus maybe a little bit can afford.

For the majority of say under 25s will it become like a house something they can never afford.

It will happen long term 100%

Only the cost of batteries holding back and they are dropping rapidly

Manufacturers are keeping the prices high ATM soon they won't have a choice

They cost less to run and break down less over the lifetime

Just have to get the charging network fully up and running
