I had signed up for our new After Work series at my home club. I have to work until 3.30 pm on Fridays, and the comp was supposed to start at 4 o'clock, so I knew I was cutting it pretty close. I need about 45 min to get to the course in afternoon traffic, but I hoped when I asked for a late tee time, I would be alright.

Now I just got the SMS with the tee time (4.20 pm) and decided to call the thing off, because there is just no way I can get there, get my stuff out of the locker and be on the tee in time for that. Registration fee would have been 10 €, which I find pretty high for a 9-hole comp anyway. When I registered, there were already almost 30 people on the list, many of them asking for a late tee time as well. So what happened? The organisers decided to start the comp half an hour earlier, at 3.30 pm instead. How dumb is that? There is daylight at least until 8.30 pm now. They could start the comp even later and still easily get everyone through. Now I am sure that quite a few of the others who registered will have to pull out as well. They did the exact same thing last year, which let to attendance for these Friday afternoon comps being very low. Seriously, what do they think when working people get off? I already find my 3.30 on Fridays quite generous.

I am really annoyed. There aren't that many weekend qualifiers over the season which I can play in at my home club, less than two a month, and the after work series would have been a nice way to get more qualifying rounds in. We already have weekly qualifiers for people who don't need to work. Why can't they manage to make this so called "After Work" challenge something that working people can attend?

That sounds stupid? How is anyone working normal hours going to be able to play?

I'm fortunate that my mid-week comp is a bit more flexible. Tee times are reserved between 1610 and 1640 however they allow later tee offs so I can start at 1800 which is ideal.

Completely understand where you are coming from and that sounds absolutely ridiculous to start it even earlier!

My club has only just started doing a 9 hole one on a Wednesday after work, yet it is just once a month. They haven't released the tee times yet but I will need to be about 6pm to get there in time!

I have also signed up for one of the club teams and they have booked the practice sessions for 4.45 on a Thursday! I am going to have to go into work at 7 and race down to be able to make it there in time. I am not sure why they cant just do a bit later considering it will be getting dark at 9.

Actually, I just had a look at the tee times list, which is now online, and they are starting even earlier, at 3 pm, so the last group goes out at 4.40 pm. I mean, yeah fine, do that, but then call it a "leisurely Friday afternoon comp for people who don't have to work" and not "after work" ... sorry for the rant, but I am really fuming at the moment.

That's just stupid - I would think an after work comp should start at 5pm! that's crazy!

At our place we have mid week medals - but there isn't a time allocated for it. Just turn up on the day pay your £1 and get on with it :) works well normally between 20 and 30 people play and the winner gets all the cash! woohoo! haven't won yet like! :(

That seems crazy. Why don't the club block book the tee between say 3 and 5:30 and make it a roll up competition ? Players can then arrive , make up groups and go out.

We have a 12 hole roll up competition on Thursday nights. Most players go out between 4 and 5:30 and there is always someone to have a game with. The club also put on extra catering and most stay for a drink and food afterwards.

Make the suggestion , I'm sure others feel the way you do and providing constructive feedback is important for these things to be a success. .

I agree it's not clever, you thnk they'd be more accomodating. However I wouldn't sign up for it anyway, I play my worst golf after work. Rushing to the course, stuck in traffic for the best part of an hour, get there and rush to get your stuff together and step on the first tee without so much as a putt or swing practiced. Worse than that my mind is still buzzing in work mode and 4 or 5 holes in, card wrecked, I just get annoyed with myself that I've got a 0.1 coming because I wasn't in any frame of mind to play golf.

I've given up on our midweek stablefords and would rather go practice than get frustrated. That's just me, I'm sure others are different.

Yeah, I wouldn't class 4:40 as after work at all. Most people work til about 5 or at least 4:30, even on a Friday! You'd need to take an afternoon off to go and tee off at 3 so it's hardly after work - it's instead of work.

our sundowners comp is on a roll up basis each thursday night, can turn up and play as and when from 4ish onwards, last group rarely go out before 6.15 and sometimes later still seems to work well for everyone who wants to play

Interesting comments, due to hopefully more working ladies joining our club, we have a recruitment drive which is going well, I was looking to have a 9 hole competition in the evening, in my mind starting from about 6pm. Surprised others start so early.

We have just started ours again after success last year. Friday evenings roll up 1700-1815, 9 hole stableford £1 entry. The bar put on a menu for the evening and pre book before you go out. Not had chance to play yet but it's usually has a good attendance.

Would make more sense to give people the time sheet of blocks of times and put you name next to it. Because obviously people ain't going to be able to make it as people finish at different times
