Hi,

I am going to have a look at 2nd hand Titleist drivers in a couple of weeks. I have never had one and don't know much about their range but had a hit with a mates 909 D2 recently and it went very well. It also looked aesthetically pleasing and I quite fancy one. Loved the crunch it made at impact too. Reminded me of a persimmon club rather than the clang of a dustbin lid that some modern drivers create at impact.

Can anybody give me a steer on what is good in terms of drivers in the Titleist range? I would like to buy an older model as I prefer what was the best thing since sliced bread of two years ago rather than the latest for £250!

I am a reasonably long hitter with high clubhead speed and I want a club that is neutral, definitely not biased for a draw or fade. Nor do I want any changeable weights in it.

Any pointers welcomed.

Thanks,

Snelly.

Current model is the 910, with the adjustable hosel. Before that was the 909, a similar pear shaped driver no adjustability, before that was the 907 which was a bit squarer than the current offering and before that the 905 which was the classic Titleist pear shape.

You can currently pick up a 909 for less than £100 and personally would look at that, I didnt like the 907 all that much personally.

The 909 actually comes in 3 different head sizes, the D3, D2 and D Comp. The D3 is the slightly smaller (440cc) head, the D2 the normal sized (460cc) head, the D Comp is also normal sized (460cc) but is supposed to launch higher.

Can i nominate this as "most modest post of the year" award potential winner please.

Try and get hold of a 909 d3 to try, great feel off the face, I found I had more control with the d3 than the d2.
not sure about the 910, but for under 100 quid the 909 are great value.

Quite. It's like saying fire is "quite warm".

I have a 909 d3 fitted with a proper blueboard shaft and at 73g it goes like stink when I bring it out and it stays particularly low for me. But hat is to do with the shaft, I switched to a d2 with the stock voodoo and it was magic but IMO the 910 is a better driver and the adjustability is an added thing once it's set you don't need to worry about it.

Well that is very kind of you to say so. It hopefully cancels out the most immodest post of the year by me in the custom fit thread! :o :D :D

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated. However, I 100% do not want anything that is adjustable. In my view these are a marketing gimmick that introduce an added variable which will inevitably create doubt rather than add benefit.

I don't know anything about either shaft either so thanks for the tips. Blueboard = low flight it would seem.

Superfast 2.0 with a stiff Matrix Ozik as standard it is then fella, I am not exactly short off the tee myself and have still found another few yards with this thing, it is .5 of a degree more lofted than my old g15 but goes a bit lower and carries further. what more could you ask for.

Had an x flex diamana blueboard in one of my 909's, fantastic ball flight, very penetrating, kind of wish I stayed with titleist instead of getting a tm!

Wouldn't touch a 909 with a bargepole. 905 will be cheaper and better in my experience.

I quite liked my 909, for the brief period I had it.

Don't get a Dcomp, it will launch way too high. The D2 is forgiving ish (as forgiving as any Titleist driver ever is), and the D3 will launch lower (low spinning head), but be less forgiving.

The most important thing is going to be the shaft.

What shaft is in your current driver?

Hmm. Good question. :D I know it's an electric blue colour and I think it might an Aldila VS Proto. Don't know more than that though. Stays relatively low I would say.

Thanks Murph...

I had a 909 and liked it. I don't know how true it is but I think I read that some tour pro's that used the 905 didn't change when the 907 and 909 came out.

I'm sure there are variations though I don't know how they differ. I think there is 905R, 905S and 905T

By all account they were a very good driver.

The 909 is a dire club, it was way worse than both the 907 and 905. The 910 knocks spots off the 909 which I have to be honest and say it was genuinely the worst driver I've ever owned. No sweet spot no feel just a horrible club.

The 905 is still in many pro's bags. That speaks volumes in my opinion.

I appreciate that is only my opinion but I rated the 905 way higher than the 909. On the other hand the 910 is light years ahead of any driver I've used before.
