I handed in my notice last week. What followed was a tale of David Brent like brilliance.

Me- can I have a word please boss
Boss- I'm too busy, is it important?
Me-i'm handing in my notice
Boss goes white and starts to shake a little
"Sit down then, why are you leaving?"
Me- more money less hours and better career path
Boss-I'm not giving you more money
Me-I'm not asking, I'm leaving
Boss-are you telling me you're definitely leaving?
Me-i thought I was being pretty clear
B-money isn't everything you know
M-you've spent the last 6 years telling me it is
B-from a business sense it is
M-so my family and career prospects don't count then?
B-this business pays for your family
M-and another business is paying me more with less hours so i may be able to see my son once in a while
B-you've lacked focus since the baby was born.
M-its hard to work 70 hours a week with a new baby in the house.
B-i did it
M-you have mental health issues though (laughing )
B-i think you're correct. We'll leave it at that just now.

NEXT DAY
B-ive decided it's best for you to leave the company.
M- I've already handed in my notice
B-but I've decided it's best for you so you can go
M-I'm going anyway
B-it's a good move for you.
M-you haven't asked where I'm going yet
B-don't tell anyone until the day before you leave, it would look bad.
M-I told everyone last night.
B-what did you tell them that for?
M-common courtesy I suppose.they are my friends after all
B-now I 'll have to tell them
M-but I've told them
B-they won't believe you
M-I showed them my new contract
B-your job is being held open for you but I can't offer you more money.are you definitely still going?
M-i don't think you're listening to me. I'm leaving the office now.

Boss then creeps round the desk and gives me a huge HUG!

I squirm and leave

When I left my last [and final] job. I watched my boss read my resignation letter.
He looks up and smiles then says, 'not much chance of you changing your mind then'.
A week later he offers me a consultants role at a slightly better rate than my final salary.
I politely decline.

Back in the 70's I worked for a division of a major bank but was then offered & accepted a better position elsewhere. Gave my notice to the Divisional MD who immediately started offering me all sorts to stay.
Anyway I declined his offers (after all who wants to have to resign to obtain the best deal) but he asked me to think about it.
Couple of days later I confirmed to him I would be leaving.
End of the month arrives (only had to give one month notice in those days) but none of my required docs. e.g. P45, deferred pension statement etc;
Turned out the MD was so confident that he would persuade me to change my mind that he hadn't advised the HR Dept I was leaving. Resulted in them paying & then reclaiming a month's salary after I had left and the MD getting a b*ll**king.
I had waited some years for the latter to happen!!

You sure that wasn't a script swiped from the BBC, that is brilliant.

At my last place I handed in my notice as I had another job lined up, it meant less travel and more money, my then boss asked what it would take for me to stay on, I told him, sorted of tongue in cheek a yearly pay rise that would cover the cost of my diesel, he went away to think about it, the same day I get home to find my new company contract waiting to be signed only for the new company to have changed the wording. What I had agreed to, having seen it in writing was "you will be based in Newcastle", what arrived on the new contract was "you will initiailly be based in Newcastle", adding that one word killed the job. So I go to work the following day fully expecting to have my notice accepted and for me to be given a final working day, but what I got was a 5 grand pay rise and the pleasure of telling the new company where to stick it.

awww well, at least he gave you a hug, a friend of mine got physically thrown out and his jacket thrown after him, his house keys still in the office.....and this was a supposedly reputable company.

P.S Glad you didnt accept any counter offers, they are the road to career ruin! The stats show around 60% who accept a counter offer leave within 6 months, however, the biggy is that around 95%+ who accept leave within 18 months. The main motivator for moving doesn't change, companies can put a sticking plaster on it and it's more cost effective to do so as it keeps you there while they succession plan.......as they know these stats as well!

Good luck in your new role.........family time is priceless!

Great story and good result - hope it all works out for you. I've finally taken the plunge and gone part-time, cashed in a few old frozen pensions to make up the difference and now (once/if the weather ever improves), looking forward to making a LOT more use of my membership fee. Guess I'll finally find out if it really has been lack of play that made me rubbish!

If they'd offered me another 40grand i wouldn't have stayed.money wasn't my motivation. I was promoted to branch manager 18 months ago and it was the worst decision I ever made, but I learned from it. Had a really difficult year with no support from above to the point my wife begged me to resign.I got an email the day after my son was born reminding me of my commitment to the company. I'm all for demanding goals etc but that took the biscuit .spending Sunday nights in work filling out health and safety forms is not my idea of a successful career, although I was continually reminded how lucky I was

Leaving with a smile on my face, ready for anything now

With a fruit loop like that as a boss I'd watch my back....horse's head in the bed.

Enjoy your new job, and the precious time with the wee one.

The second company I worked for, part of the NHS, the IT dept. was run by a total tool, who decreed that family came second to work, you can guess what the reaction of people was to that. He was also the bloke, who stood up at an IT conference amonsg his peers and bear in mind here this man was the director of IT, and said "Hello, my name is Dan and I know nothing about IT", now whether this was meant as a joke, we'll never know, but it backfired big style, as the following week in the computing press, there was a full A3 head and shoulders picture of him, with the tag line, Dinosaur Dan knows nothing about IT and the following article about people in power who know nothing about their jobs.

This is very true. Once you say you are leaving, leave.

At another job I left in the early 1980's the club managed to arrange a £2k pa rise for me within 2 hours of handing in my notice.
The club had given me a really tough time in my first 6 months and somehow four years later I was irreplaceable [according to them]
I was on a good salary already. When I left I mentioned jokingly to the captain that the committee must have been aware that I was underpaid.
