Dont play rubbish golf courses that have mats?

Many links courses (including the rubbish ones at st Andrews!) and many top courses in East Lothian are on mats at this time of year.

My local muni gets very wet and naturally has a lot of people playing it so use mats on every hole in the winter. Makes perfect sense to protect them and give the members half a chance once the Spring and season starts but it's one of only a few I can think of. We never use mats but in the winter the green staff are very, very good about moving the markers on all tees on an almost daily basis to avoid compaction and too much wear
