A plea...

As Ron Burgundy might say......this escalated quick!!!

Is this interesting enough for you Tiger?? We're pshyco-analysing each other now!!! ;)

Also you could argue that this forum is part dating site as there seems to be a lot of forum meets, but in this case instead of meeting to have sex you meet to play golf. And if you get your leg over it's a bonus. ;) So it does become a bit more personal and cliques can appear.

If I'd have managed that with anyone I've met a the Irish Craic meets then it certainly wouldn't have been a bonus! :D

Thee will always be spats, arguments and disagreements. Do you always agree with everything that is said inside he 19th? My goal (which I've failed on at times) is to treat people on here as I would in any clubhouse bar. If I disagree I try and put my argument together in a rational (in my head at least manner) and try and see both sides. I think that considering the amount of traffic tis forum gets, the amount of fall out is relatively small.

If we take the MikeH intervention and the loss of some, regardless of whether you consider it right or wrong, as the lowest of the low and draw a line in the sand, it has seem to me at least that the forum is moving on up again. New members are joining, there are still some great offers from the GM team and plenty of meets at good courses being arranged. It ain't a bad place to spend a bit of time and sure as hell beats sitting in front of the TV watching soaps

but why is that? Mine doesn't change what you get online is what you get in real life

That can't be right... I always thought of you as 5' 6" until we met,.... you're like, 8ft tall!!! :p

Please portray a taller online persona in future!... talk about reaching top shelves or changing lightbulbs without using ladders wherever possible :D

Very true! I'm a knob on here and a knob in real life. Just ask any of my 'friends'.....richart, therod, robobum, swinger, wookie, rgdave, pnwokingham........

Forums of all types are subject to the Spat-o-meter scale:

1 Calm – someone posts an innocuous message on the message board.
2 Scuffle – another person says "ooh, that wasn't funny/fair/kind".
3 Tussle – a few more people get involved either to back up the original poster or to agree with the dissenter. Someone says "I find that very offensive".
4 Scrap – serious insults start to appear. First post removal occurs. Thread reaches 50 replies.
5 Fracas – spat really gets going as people threaten to leave. Plaintive cries of "why can't we all be nice?" can be heard.
6 Affray – first mention of newbies v. oldies. People are accused of hi-jacking the thread for their own agenda.
7 Fight – first flounce occurs. The thread now has over 100 replies.
8 Punch-up – moderators get involved. Thread no longer makes sense as so many posts have been removed.
9 Brawl – first mention of 'cliques'. More flouncing. High number of 'please don't go' posts can be observed.
10 All–out war – multiple flouncing. Thread now covers six pages. Spat enters GM (name forum) folklore.

LMAO  I shall endeavour to contain hints of my go go Gadget capabilities in future posts ;)

Sid Rixon... very funny :D

By their nature I think internet forums have a time span and a sell by date. As after time people just get bored about the same posts about the same subjects with the same replies.

Plus this forum is one of the most heavily censored and moderated forums I have ever seen. Which is not a criticism (well I suppose it is a little one) but that also means that it can get very sanitised, and therefore become a little dull at times.

Well spotted, in comparison to many sports forums its very heavy handed where it didn't use to be. To quote someone recently, "it was easy when the forum had a club feel but as it grew its become harder to police and the clubby feeling started to go". Unfortunately the growth is what has started to pull it down a bit IMO and it all appears to have happened very quickly.

I understand Mikes position in protecting brand image but a lot of threads are lacking humour now, people are struggling to laugh at themselves which is a trait more prevalent in American forums.

Guys, its time to bring the fun back to the forum, when fun disappears it becomes dull. Laugh at yourselves once in a while and read between the lines when viewing what at first appears to be a dig when in fact its an attempt at a wind up. Do that and you're half way there.

Good post Val

I don't think some of the posts or replies in threads are banter or wind ups, they come from a minority. What gets on my nerves is the "what a load of tosh ..." Or " utter rubbish" posted about other people's opinions or comments. That just lacks diplomacy and if you did it at the golf club, god help you because your life would be made miserable, you would get a nickname and everyone would call you it!
The problems on forums is they allow people to go to end of the scale with behaviour with people they don't know. On the golf course most people take time to warm up or you judge a situation that your playing with a cold fish or boring sausage.
I have yet to do a forum meet, but I have golfed with other guys I have met on forums (we both joked that we had told our wives where we were going and we should be back at x time, if not we were in a boot of a car heading for a nasty end, so call the police). We all have a common interest and that should be a good enough point to communicate with each other civilly...on the course and the forum.

I tell you what, I have no idea why people feel the need for cheap insults, bad mouthing, petty squabbling and one-upmanship. Can't we all just take a leaf out of the mother of all parliaments and behave just like the people running our country do in PMQs? ;)

And if you take issue with someone's opinion then challenge the to a duel, like they did in the good old days.

Predictable yet funny!! :) No banter no interest me!! I live with it on the course with the boys and have been brought up with it all my life.

I co-run a forum in my other life and it can get heated and silly with stupid comments on there but there's always got to be a line... You should act and argue as you would do day to day. Treat people with respect and how you would expect to be treated yourself. Pitch up and start a fight and expect the fall out as well as sustaining a reputation for the future. To many rules and reg as well as do and dont's etc and you have a dull non interesting and possibly low populated forum. Trolls  will come and go but the serious contenders will hang around and contribute regularly. Forum levels of popularity and interest will fluctuate as has been suggested already and I guess some think its at a low at the moment. Personally, I like the more controversial or more well thought out threads and am less likely to comment seriously to "Does my arse look good in these new pair of bright pink satin TM pants and should I get them to match my Driver" threads. :whoo:Thanks for listening and dont take things too seriously chaps:)
