A plea...

Keyboard warriors mate, people have lost perspective about what really matters in life.

By the way, if you are genuinely a Coventry City fan, there are probably less painful ways to do yourself in. :)

I'm normally at the course when they are playing "home" games so I'm trying a proV1 to the head instead of slitting the wrists. Just a shame that they seem to be playing some of the best football they have for years and no-one is there to watch.

By their nature I think internet forums have a time span and a sell by date. As after time people just get bored about the same posts about the same subjects with the same replies.

Plus this forum is one of the most heavily censored and moderated forums I have ever seen. Which is not a criticism (well I suppose it is a little one) but that also means that it can get very sanitised, and therefore become a little dull at times.

Also you could argue that this forum is part dating site as there seems to be a lot of forum meets, but in this case instead of meeting to have sex you meet to play golf. And if you get your leg over it's a bonus. ;) So it does become a bit more personal and cliques can appear.

As for people getting more angry and taking offence then that's society today I am afraid. Give a person a keyboard and a forum password, mix in some alcohol and trouble may well occur. I think there could possibly also be a bit of a culture clash at times between traditional members of golf clubs with their etiquette and values, and the way a lot of people behave in the internet. Again not a criticism as no one is in the right, but sometimes the differing sides do not see the others point of view (and yes I am more than guilty of this)

You been reading the York weekender thread too then.....

Fair enough Tiger. I suppose that I didn't have to resort to a couple of insults yesterday on the Car Park members thread. A post I made was seized on by another member and silly accusations were made. I could have ignored it, but I didn't. It was all pretty childish in the end.

For me, it put a red mark on 2 fantastic threads. Really good discussion threads that looked at the changing role of golf clubs in modern society. The type of thread that if I was a golf club manager, I'd be reading intently.

There is still an awful lot of good stuff on this forum. Genuine people having a laugh and forming friendships. I was talking to a friend last night at work who is thinking of starting to play golf. My first piece of advice was to join this forum. Not for the technical advice, but for the forum meets. As part of the NW contingent, I have made so many good friends. I've had regular invites to numerous great local courses. We're off to York next week for 3 days to drink heavily, I mean play golf!!! This wouldn't have happened without this place.

So yes, there is some needle. Some harsh words spoken at times. But there is far more good still. And anyway, sometimes a bit of needle is fun to watch. I know that I've never been personally offended by anything on this forum. Liverbirdies leather cap on the other hand!!!

It's inevitable that so called forum cliques will appear if guys are making the effort and meeting up for regular games. If its possible I'd advise anyone who's not done so to do the same, if you use the forum regular you'll get a hell of a lot more out of it once you've met a few of the guys on here.

Without wishing to even suggest that I'd be remotely fit and able to organise but who knows, there could well be the makings of a North Vs South Vs Even more Northern vs Anglian Vs Welsh (you get mi drift) meet up. Open to the guys and gals that are meeting up in their regions currently - would take alot of commitment (and a 'few' pennies) but that would help stop a cliquey forum feel, build some banter and hopefully wouldn't end in a running battle in the 19th :D.

Just a loose thought, probably a bad one, but what an article it would make in the GM sponsored forum meet event, complete with fitting trucks and freebies.....

There used to be the annual England V Scotland meet up in Goswick every year. 2 days of golf and plenty of beer. Thing is it takes a massive amount of organising and the event ran out of volunteers to run it.

If there is one massive thing that has helped this forum it is the people who put hours in arranging the larger events. When I first started on here and there was only about a dozen contributors, a meet was just a 4 ball at someone's course. Now people take on the task of sorting big events for dozens of people are renowned courses. That is a massive step up and deserves a round of applause. Not everything on the forum has got worse.

Being a reletive newbie i didn't know this and also didn't know the forum in its 'lighter' days that people speak of here. Therefore i have no judgement over it being any worse or better than it was.

Of course I realise that such things take massive dedication and why I 'loosely' placed the suggestion. I'm attending my first forum meet at St Annes next month and given the pm's sent and received by Birchy just from me can fully understand the prep that goes into it - its fantastic and the same goes for everyone else in their respective regions who are doing the same. As you say, a massive, massive plus for the forum and one reason why i haven't come and gone as an info-seeking new registrar.

And i so know i'm going to top my first drive for my first shot at my first forum meet (paaaarp)...!

There are more than a few people who have done that in the past.

This forum is just like a golf club, full of different people from different walks of life ,some people are traditionalist while others want change, who cares if if someone gets upset, just go with flow, why make enemies .Theres a lot of people on this forum I'd love to have a round of golf with, but in truth theres a lot I wouldn't

Spot on, apart from last sentence.

There isn't one person I've come across on here that I wouldn't happily play 18 holes with. They might not feel the same, but I'm cool with that too :)

Yea,your dead right ,I was just playing Devil's Advocate with last line I guess,in the summer I play the east Yorkshire coastal golf clubs,Brid, scarborough, filey, whitby I can honestly say all the blokes I have met have been fantastic, they like a round of golf something to eat and a pint not much different to what we all like, its just having the craic and not getting hump when things go wrong. So I'll take your advice and play with anyone n this forum

I tend to disagree with OP.
I think that lately there have been some very good debates and the forum has been well behaved.

It would be a very boring world if everyone agreed with each other.

I am sure that GM takes any criticism seriously. They are a business after all and they have to listen to their customers before they become non customers.

spot on. People have to remember that people's Internet persona is quite often different to their real life persona.

but why is that? Mine doesn't change what you get online is what you get in real life

I would say that any would be in the minority - sure there will be the odd keyboard warrior on here, I'd generalise and say they would also be the same ones that put their name in for every forum meet and then repeatedly drop out when firm commitment and money is mentioned.

The thing is, as I'm sure most of us are aware, that written word in posts/ emails etc can be interpreted completely differently from person to person and how the composer intended it. No stupid smiley will ever suffice either.

If the reader can accept that and cut the writer a bit of slack (at least initially) then we'll all just be so chummy eh?
;) :):(
