So I had my second lesson on Wednesday, the pro told me that my grip and stance were good, but I needed to work on my swing. Apparently I'm thinking too much at the moment! Anyway, he's got me hitting irons off the tee and he's told me when i'm hitting them well, I should get a wood out and have a few shots with the wood - then when I slice one, get back on the irons.

He told me that I needed a 3 wood and not to use a driver, I don't have a 3 wood, so I went out to AG earlier today. I plumped on a Ben Sayers M1 3 wood, 15*. I was hitting it well and the pro told me to go cheap until I had perfected my swing.

So anyway, hitting the club maybe 3/4 times when I catch a ball lovely and it's soaring really far down the range....oh wait a minute, no it's not....That's the club head. Lol. So yeah basically the club head went flying off past the 175 mark.

I went back and got a refund, but was wondering if this is a frequent occurance? I didn't hit it badly at all, it was off a tee and I wasn't hitting the turf.

My friend found off his new G10 driver from ebay is a fake today too, so not a good day for clubs :(

PS - I had a look on onlinegolf, and they only seem to have a section for driver and fairway woods. Are most 3 woods fairway woods? I kinda would prefer it not to be as I have a 19* and 24* fairway woods/hybrids already and a big head makes me feel a bit more confident!

Not a common occurrence wit brand new clubs but at least you got a refund. If I was you I'd look at something like an MD or Benross 3 wood as these manufacturers are producing top quality kit at respectable prices and so what you pay extra now you will recoup in longevity

Yes, 3-woods, 5-woods, 7-woods etc are all fairway woods - which essentially describes how they were intended to be used - off the short stuff. 3's and 5's are commonly used off the tee; a lot of people (not me) get pretty much the same distance with a 3 as with a driver - hence your pro's advice.
there's a bit of info here but with a little searching you'll find more

Ah that's brilliant Viscount, thanks for that. The pro said that i should pick up an old 3 wood as it's just for working on my swing and I'd probably get rid of it in the spring.

I'm keeping my eye out but places like AG only stock the latest models and on ebay I don't know if I'm buying a model from last year or one from 15 years back!

I checked out some MD and Benross ones, they look good, but I guess you never really know until you hit them!

I have the Benross V6 trimass 3 & 5 wood, they are great, I paid $40, the shaft alone is worth more than that, I am now thinking of getting the hybrid of the same.

The Trimass range is very good, much as the ITX2 range hippo did was very good.

If I had to recommend a much overlooked manufacturer of woods its Benross & their trimass range I tried out a few of their drivers etc. Infact I even was so impressed I got the missus a 3 wood in the ladies range & a hybrid.
