My good mate will be 60yrs old in July and I want to treat him to a round of golf at somewhere nice.
I think I've narrowed it down to two but I'm open to other suggestions of course. (See what I did there?).
East Sussex National or Royal Ashdown Forest, both of which are within easy striking distance of us in Surrey.
Comments please, don't be shy boys and girls.
Oh, and thanks,

Slime.

I'm looking at up to £75 but may stretch to £100 for something uber special (with guaranteed sunshine).

RAF is a good choice then. ESN (both courses) are quite a long walk, you may want to factor in the cost of a buggie?

Others to consider........ Chart Hills or London club if you like modern courses.

Or more traditional courses look at Tandridge (lots of improvements to the course recently) or my pick would be West Sussex.

Royal Ashdown or West Sussex would top my choice for something like this - I would go trad over modern everytime.

At that time of year 27 holes at St Georges Weybridge makes a fantastic day and would be my No 1 (what you save on travelling costs and time will cover the additional cost in my book :))

Without knowig your normal courses it's hard to go wider.

Tandridge with the 'full lunch' if that suits your style...

I don't like Royal Ashdown... too many trees. I wouldn't say 'goat track' but it's nothing to write home about.

East Sussex National is excellent.... but would love to play Chart Hills.

Camberley Heath is also very nice.

Not sure what the price per person is but I'd go for a round at The Berkshire with the lunch thrown in. Two great courses and although you need to wear jacket and tie to enjoy it the lunch is divine

I would definitely go for East Sussex National, you could play 36 holes and a buggy for 100quid a man. It is a good test of golf but very playable and has a little history previously hosting a European Tour event. Condition is always good and there are some nice touches which make it feel special - such as complimentary bag drop and club cleaning. Places like the Berkshire would be my choice if your budget doubled and you wanted a very traditional experience, but I think you will enjoy ESN.

Chart Hills is a pretty decent course especially in late spring. They do deals but will still cost around £60 ish, the course can get boggy when wet but the practise facilities are worth getting there early and using. Good choice of tees but, for me, the blues are demanding enough to test your golf. The food is always pretty decent but the drinks are a bit pricey

And mine.

If you are prepared to drive a bit further you could play Liphook for £38 after 4.00, or £64 at other times. Just about the best, quickest greens you will find, and deservedly a GM top 100 course. Hankley Common is £60 after 4.00, and is one of the best heathland courses around and a top 50 course.

I've played Chart Hills, and hated it, Hankley I love, the Berkshires I've played a few times & Bearwood Lakes is pure quality.
It's now probably between Royal Ashdown Forest, East Sussex National, Liphook & West Sussex.
It's not until the end of July so time is on our side.
Thanks for your input, keep it coming,

Slime.
