Having started playing again last year after a lengthy departure from the game i bought a starter set of Golden Bear clubs and thought i would be ok with these for quite some time. However, having renewed my sand wedge for a Wilson Deep Red i noticed what a difference this club made to my short game. I therefore proceded to buy a complete set of the Deep Reds and have completely improved my whole game coming from a 28 handicap down to a 22 after just 3 months! Is this a confidence issue or is it the difference between golf sets that has made such an impact on my game?

I'd say its a mixture of better clubs and confidence.

Keep up the hard work on the course and i'm sure you will lower your handicap even more.

I think that the quality of clubs will make some difference. A set of cheap irons may be ideal for a complete newbie but once you have a swing that gets the ball going forward consistantly then you'll notice how these don't help in certain situations in terms of feel and distance.

Even a modest set (Benross or MD) will give you much more forgiveness and feel. The thing with these starter sets is that they are designed to help get the ball airborne and so it is only when you play with a better quality set that you can see how that robs you of distance.

There is also a lot to be said for feeling confident over the ball and a set of shiny new sticks will reinforce that feeling. However it may just come down to playing more reguarly and beginning to understand your own swing and game that have made the difference. If you want to see real improvement get a couple of lessons with a PGA pro and let him iron out your swing faults and then a teen figure handicap will loom.

You are striking the ball with much more confidence and the club is a better quality.

Combine the two and the H/C is bound to fall, (lucky you I still cant choose the clubs for me).

NeilyB ,

You are helping to make up my mind about my irons.
I have Orka KII on crap shafts and my iron play has gone down the Swanee. I am having lessons at present and once these are over and I have gone as far as I can with these irons, I will be looking at Cobra SZ.
