Not got my handicap sorted out but it should be somewhere around 18-20. Playing as part of a 4 ball tomorrow and the highest handicap amongst the others is 4! Any tips to avoid the inevitable self loathing and feelings of inadequacy that will no doubt lead to a round from hell?

Dont worry and enjoy their rounds. I play with a guy off 1 quite a bit and i enjoy it and play better with him than i do normally with people around my handicap. Sounds silly but take p,easure from their shots and enjoy the game. Youll be surprised how many of yours are not that different to theirs too.

Remember 18 is only 1 shot per hole.

If you announce you're a 20 handicapper to me, I'll think, "Okay. This guy's going to hit some bad shots and some good shots and may even make a couple of birdies."

So then I'd encourage your good shots and try to help you forget about the bad shots.

Just don't beat yourself up and certainly don't try and compete with the rest. Just play the course and if you play to handicap, you may even beat them!

And none of them will think any less of you if you duff one, top one, thin one, slice one, shank one, fat one, etc.

Just enjoy yourself and the course.

suprising what you can learn from playing with good players, sometimes makes you play better yourself, just play your own game and ENJOY IT

Don't try and match their game, just focus on enjoyment, learning and play your game!

Be ready to play when it's your turn, keep your eye on the ball till it stops, dont throw a wobbly on the bad shots and enjoy the round !

remember they were all high handicappers once and.............
oh hell, you posted yesterday so your there right now with jelly legs etc, I can gaurantee by the end of the round you will feel like "What was I so worried about" as at least 1 prob 2 will play not that well and certainly not to their h/cap

Two weeks ago I played my first society and went round in a four ball with two 12 hp's and a fellow 28. It was daunting as I didn't know the other blokes and I've only been playing since November.
After hacking my way through the first two par fours on the second I chipped onto the green from just off the fringe with my 8 iron (using a putting swing) and the ball finished a couple of inches from the hole and I managed a par. One of the lads off 12 was so impressed he started doing the same with his 8 iron. I never expected any of them to learn something from me, quite the opposite, but it proves that no matter what level you play at, there's always something to learn!

Hope my experience encourages you to get out there and enjoy yourself.

Thanks for the support guys! Started off horribly with a 6 at the first two holes. Improved immensly after that and shot a none too bad 85. Highlight of the round was a 6 iron tee shot to half an inch from the cup - So close to that first hole in one!
