I'm going out for my 3rd handicap round tomorrow. I've been playing quite a bit this week and have found a little bit of form, hitting good shots, just keep leaving myself with long putts which end up running short!

Hopefully it will all come together tomorrow!

Scores so far:

Any ideas what I would be looking at for my first handicap?

Good going. Whats the SSS of your course? I assume that you're an adult male; that being the case, you're looking at a handicap of the approx difference between the SSS and your 3 round average (up to a maximum of 28). So, unless you pull a blinder in your next round you're looking at a handicap of 28.

good luck with your 3rd card tomorrow.

I'm starting my handicap journey off next week once my membership goes live, although have been playing very poor of late (since xmas)

I'm putting this down to changing all of my clubs, my grip and my course in the cold season. I was shooting +22 and Longhirst, Northumberland before the big change so I wouldn't recommend anyone do it.

I put in my first handicap card yesterday in our summer league. Scored an even 100 which I don't think was indicative of what I can do, I wasn't able to hit a single practice putt or get a proper swing warm up due to being first out of the hat on the morning.

It's not the average of your 3 cards but the best of your 3.

See what happens tomorrow but don't go out there with a mindset of trying to score or beat any particular number. It will be what it is on the day. If you start at 28 so what. The only way is down and I'm sure once you start playing in regular comps this will happen naturally and quickly of its own accord

Never seen a course with stroke index one being a par 3. Also stroke index 2 appears to be the easiest hole on the course as you are one under on that hole. :D :D

Good luck with the last card, and getting a handicap.

The SI 1 Par 3 is supposidly the hardest par 3 in the UK... its not that difficult tbh. The 17th is currently playing shorter as they are extending it, was quite lucky with that one.

Homer you are right, I'd be happy with 28 as a start mark. I know I can play so much better. I'm still getting to know the course and just need to cut out the silly mistakes and making 7's 8's and 9's

Is it a dogleg ? ;) We have a couple of tough ones, 200 yards to raised greens, but they are only stroke index 10 and 15. According to the stats on Howdidido they should be nearer 5 or 6.

My main problem at the mo is going OB and having to take pen shots. If I can cut those out by going shorter rather than blast to the green I should be able to save some shots.

Its all course management.

I agree with 23 from those 2 cards.

The reason it's not 28 is that the most they will take as a score on any single hole is double bogey, so any scores over 5 on a par 3, 6 on a par 4, or 7 on a par 5 will be adjusted down.

Doing that makes your second 92. Less sss of 69 = 23 h'cap.

Good luck tomorrow. It's your best chance of lowering your handicap, because it's darn hard to do it 0.4 at a time once you have it.
