3 wedges?

If I was you I'd just stick with the pw and a sw. Just play "normal" shots with them, no need to open or close the face and try the fancy shots. Accept that the club you have will get it on the green albeit a little further away from the flag than a higher lofted club may get you.

Once you are comfortable hitting these "normal" chips and pitches then introduce a club with more loft.

Think this is good advice,i can see the benifits of using a more lofted wedge from say 20 yards and in and trying to get more hight and landing softly on the green. The disadvanteges for me using this club from farther out is having to use a fuller swing as opposed to a half swing with a p/w or s/w, imo shorter swing = better distance control.

But i suppose it gets down to how good a player you are, cant really see players mid to high h/c really benifiting by having to many wedges,i am in my mid 50s and to be honest i am never going to that good to be able to use all these differant wedges.

3 wedges; PW, SW and LW. I use the 60 degree lob wedge the most I guess as I use it for every chip, bunker shot or approach from under 75 yards. Only use SW or PW for the distances I can hit them apart from when hitting a low punch from about 100 yards as I use the PW for this.

I carry 4 wedges but the lob wedge is only really for green side bunkers as I am pretty confident with it in those situations. With the strong lofts on PW these days I feel that a gap wedge is essential.

Bob, any advice whould be greatly appreciated.

Learn the clockface drill.
or/and

Hold your PW at the bottom of the grip, heels 4in apart, weight mostly on your front foot and ball in the centre of your stance.
Swing back so your left arm is parallel with the ground and the clubshaft is at 90 degrees pointing at the sky.
Then swing through the ball with a downward strike taking a divot and stop the followthrough when the right arm is parallel to the ground (a mirror image of the b/swing).
This should hit the ball 50-60 yards
For longer shots, switch to the 8 or 9 or lengthen the swing
For shorter shots, SW/LW or a shorter swing.
And PRACTICE.
:D

Thoroughly endorse this. My pro showed me this shot a couple of years back and it really works a treat.

47, 50, 54 and 58 for me.
I like having options around the green and don't always reach for the 58. SOmetimes, as Brendy says, it pays to be creative and play the club and shot that suit the occasion.

Off 3?
That does surprise me.
No 7 or 8 iron bump and run or low flighted 9 iron or wedge?

Just changed from 52/56/60 to 50/54/58 (as well as PW which is 47), happier to close the difference between PW and GW, hopefully the 58 is more workable than the 60

I don't think it is that unusual. John Daly advocates the same in that he recommends using the same club for short shots around the green.

I am not a great player of a chip and run shot and am consistently closer with a low flighted chip with a lob wedge that stops after a couple of bounces. I will use a 9 iron to chip and run if I have a bare lie or am playing links golf where the lie is tighter.

We will have to have a game Bob and you can see for yourself if it works or not...! :D

I do hit a low PW (as stated in my post above) for a low punched pitch quite often too.

Worse still I am off 4 now! :-)

That said, after yesterday's efforts at West Sussex, anyone could beat me. About 40% of my shots went straight left. Cost me a fiver. Think I was trying to hit the ball too hard or was hitting from the top - pressures of work. Edited to say, come to think of it, I only took the game to the last hole by chipping well!! :D

Sorry to hijack the thread!

Ping Tour wedges - ace. Buy some.

Snelly.

I'm not saying you're wrong it's just most good players I know use all different clubs to chip with.
It just goes to show, there's more than one way to play golf well :D

I wouldn't bother Snelly. He'll only moan, moan moan that he's had to give you 3 shots instead of just 2
;)

Actually, as a cat I golfer Snelly would probably insist on playing off the stick as all good players would do.

Absolutely. Er...what would we play for? I may have a rethink! :D

I usually carry PW (46*) a GW (52*) and a SW (58*) but in the summer I do drop a fairway wood for the LW (60*) and swap the 58 for a 56 as we tend to have a lot of greenside collars and rough and it gives that bit more control. However as others have said it needs to be used sparingly as it can cost more than it saves. I'm still not convinced it is worth carrying but do so anyway. Next summer and I'll make a definite decision
