3 minute search rule

Or, put another way, at that point the player could have returned to where his provisional ball had been and, after adding another 1 stroke penalty for picking it up (playing 5) completed the hole without being DQ.
Yes, it seems like the referee was a little premature in the DQ, or the facts of the situation (timing) were incorrectly stated.

Unfortunately if you find your ball after the 3 minutes is up, it's tough luck, you can't play it.

I have a question, how did the rule official know that this had happened in order to punish the player? Was he with you the whole time?

Just a regional one.. the annoying thing was we finished the hole and went onto the next tee a par 3. We we're waiting on the tee for them to finish the hole again... and that was the rules guy came over and disqualifed him. As we were waiting to tee off! I know 3 mins is 3 mins and they are the rules but it felt unreasonable ha

I am another one who finds this a bit a bit surprising. I thought the rules official should have advised him of what he had just done and advised him of his option to correct the error.

Surely the rules official is there to only advise on a ruling if hes asked to and cant advise off his own back to a player?

The new rules when searching for a golf ball is that you have 3 minutes to search for your ball. We had a situation today where a playing parter hit his ball in the rough and we spent longer than the allocated 3 minutes finding the ball. It wasn't to much longer literally 5 mins and we found it... It was a par 4 and in a competition.

The group behind us were not on the tee box yet, and the group in front were still putting out so we weren't going anywhere. We got pulled up about it by a rules official, but our argument was that we were not affecting the pace of play as if we stopped searching at the 3 minute mark we would just be stood there catching fly's waiting for the green to clear... So my question in this situation what happens? Up to 3 minutes or when you are able to hit your next shot seems sensible to me thoughts?
Imo it’s a stupid rule. I play at a golf course that is covered in leaves this time of year. I play off 1 and 3 mins is not long enough. All these stupid new rules are a joke. This one for instance is never carried out properly as no one starts a stop watch. Another is 90% for doubles and full shots in singles matchplay. Could we help the choppers out more. Who wants to see a good golfer shoot 4 under playing off 1 lose to a hacker off 28 who for once has managed a modicum of hand to eye coordination. Three quarters was perfectly fine. Rant over.

😂😂😂

Welcome - nothing beats a first post like handicap snobbery

And 3 mins is fine

It’s not snobby it’s facts. 3 minutes is fine. No one does 3 mins unless your with a stickler another fact. How long you been playing golf.
It’s not fact at all when the handicaps of people who are winning the main comps are still the low to mid handicaps.

90% also helps out the low handicaps when it’s comes to 4BBB comps for example - how many shots do the cat 1s lose , answer is none

And we do 3 mins , it’s the rules , simple as that

And what does it matter how long i have played

Just quickly I’ll tell you why 90% and full shots are stupid. A player off of 18 doesn’t get 18 bogies. He’ll have a 10 then get 3 pars so you win one and have to birdie the next three for a half. When proper golfers like sir Michael Bonnalack were running it they knew this, know we must have golfers who don’t realise this running it.

90 % is known to be incorrect and will be sorted over the next few years.
Will take 2 steps more but we will get there. The rest of the planet are already there 🤗

Well it sort of matters because like everything else in life, the longer you’ve done it the more you understand. I don’t and never will think it’s correct that a 28 handicapper wins anything because a chimp could knock it round in 18 over with a bit of training. Someone who is expert shouldn’t lose to someone who’s useless. The 3 mins rule you agree with says you are a higher handicapper as what’s two shots when you’ve got another 10 to drop. I just think they should leave the rules alone. I went round today in 5 under but because in the opinion of some stickler I’d looked for just over 3 mins it was changed to 3 under. So I’m not happy with this stupid rule.

Well you are proof that the longer you do something the more you understand is a bit false 🙄

So from what I can guess - you have been beaten by someone in a handicap event and it’s just sour grapes - so my answer is just play scratch events then , but I guess you aren’t good enough to win them - I can’t wait for when it goes to 100% 😂

And the pros agreed with the 3 minute rule , Im not sure why if someone agrees with a timing rule they are a high HC ?

And I time myself when searching for my ball so I don’t fall foul of the rule - at the end of the day you broke the rule and the only person to blame is yourself - suck it up

😂😂

😂😂 you time yourself. With an actual stopwatch? Shall I tell you what happens in real life. You look for your ball until everyone has played their shot and walks as far as where your ball is. This happens in every club up and down the country. No one actually times you. As for handicap adjustments I’m 52 and have been of 1 or less for 25 odd years so I don’t get touched. It’s not cheating in my book as everybody does it. It’s not moving the ball. It’s a rule that you need to put some sort of timescale on but in reality as long as your group are keeping up with the pace of play and it’s not taking forever, normally it’s less but sometimes more than 3 mins. If you find it at 3 mins 10 sec do you think you should lose 2 shots. I think I can guess your answer. But I’m afraid if people were honest, maybe not you, this isn’t very often kept too. Btw I still won but I had the hump with the stickler as did the rest of the lads.

Sorry to go on that bloke ain’t no pro. That’s what he calls himself on here. Otherwise he’d of spoke a bit more sense. If he is a pro then he’s probably only just sprouted pubes and is lying.

Listen I was actually looking for the R&A site but stumbled across this. You right I’m just moaning. Good luck in your golfing endeavours and stop timing yourself coz no one else does. Happy golfing. 😀👍

Well for a 51 year old man you certainly come across as a pre pubescent adolescent yourself, your first posts to the forum are to effectively state you happily flount the rules, handicap snobbery stating even a chimp could play to 18, have you considered some people aren't interested in being as low as they can and just want social golf. Then you state someone must be a high handicapper because they stick to the rules..

You must be a delight to play golf with 🙄
