3 Club challenge

Right, our society day next month at frodsham gc were having a 9 hole 3 club comp which must include a putter.

This will be the 1st time i've played this particular format so can you help me choosing the other 2 clubs.

I'm pretty good with my 3 wood off the tee and fairway but i'm contemplating either: 3wood,8i, putter or 21* hybrid,7i and putter.

Should i be looking at taking other sticks?

Thats strange, isnt it normally a 4 club comp which consists of 3 clubs & your putter giving you 1 club each from wood, long iron & short iron?

If it is 3 clubs only, i'd say that either of your choices is fine but you're going to struggle if you hit any bunkers or need to pitch something up. But then if you take a wedge you're going to struggle for length from the fairway!!

Double check if I was you fella that its not 4 clubs...
 
Depends on how long your course is, but why not a 6 iron and 9 iron? 6 iron good enough for 170/80 a pop and will get you to most par 4s in two and 5s in three, are workable from the rough (not that you will be in any :D)and 9 iron for anything from 140 to a little chip and run and bunker shots.

I came second in a comp with this format using these, but there were no exceptionally long holes :D

In a 3 club comp you have to think about what you will do after you hit your 3w in the rough, when you only have limited options?

HNJ, i was thinking 3wood as there's 3 400+ yds holes nd my idea was FW 200 ish 7i 150ish then if needed chip'n'run.

Any rough or sand use the the 7i to get back in play then attack.

Other than that 21*hybrid 180ish 8i 130ish, but also use the hybrid for any rough.

Should i be thinking outside the box?

Its hard to say, I know a lot of golfers who are shy to try something out of the comfort zone, but the comfort zone is often fantacy. Each golfers club ranges are personal but what I suggest is an alternative to what I have seen a lot of golfers do in this format, which is usually big club, little club. But you have to think about your performances with said choices and what you are going to do if you hit in trouble? 6&9 or 5&8 irons may well surprise you, however if you hit a 3w well I cant fault you for that. management of your game is very important in this format.

If you have the chance to play a few holes before the comp, try playing them the way I suggest and see what you score, then balance that against what you recon you could do following another route. ;)
 
I like HNJ choice of 6&9 as you can open up a 9 for bunker shots easy enough

You say you have 400+ holes however you dont need to hit them all in two shots in a 3 club challenge

Couple of half decent 6 irons then a pitch on sounds good to me
 
Thats a good point andiritchie, after all how many players (even single figue players) hit the long par 4 greens in 2 in normal play with Driver and iron? Even on a 420 yd par 4, you will get there or thereabouts with two 5 irons, (bigger hitters with two 6 irons) leaving just a shorty to the green.
 
id use my 7wood and 7iron - instead of a 7wwod people have a hybrid so id go for a hybrid and a 7iron i think.

I think I'd go the Hybrid, 9 iron route. Plenty of length with the hybrid and plenty of scope with the 9. Anyway don't forget, these things are meant to be fun!

Why not surprise them all and go 3 wood , wedge!!!!

If that's the case I know a mate of mine who would genuinely go with a 5W and a 9I. He could make that blimmin 5W sing and dance. Anything from 200 yds to 90 yds. In fact, make it a one club game, and he'd happily putt with it as well.

I'd still go something like 4I, 8I then.
 
This to me is a bit daft.
I pressume this is supposed to be a fun competition.
Why dont the powers that be allow you another club?
Then you cam choose a long, medium and short club and your putter.
That to me would be more fun, trying to hit different types of shots with different clubs.
I wonder how many putters will be broken trying to hit them 250 yds.
So come on you committee members, give your members a break and let them have 4 clubs.
After all, they are paying a fat wodge of cash to be members and you are telling them they cant use 3/4s of their clubs. :(
 
I'd take....

1.Money for beer,
2. A good book, and
3. Some binoculars to watch the golf from afar.

Can't think of anything worse......
 
you're lucky, you get notice of these events. For us the morning format will be medal or more usually Stableford and we get told on the day what the afternoon format will be.

you have the opportunity to try 9-holes with different combinations but I'm with HNJ on this, 6&9
