Went down to the range tonight with MVP and centregolf via the cobra rep have kindly given me a 6I ProCB iron with the 5.5 Stiff-flex rifle shaft.

1st impressions were fantastic and this is by far the nicest iron I have ever hit.

I hit it very well indeed, was very confident with it and even got comfortable enough to try a few 20yd cuts and big draws to guage the workability.

Really impressed with them, great feel, great looks, nice to hit and subject to trying the MB model, these may well be in my bag very, very soon!

Chuffed, my week is just getting better!!!

Don't you just love it when you go out with a club hoping it will do everything you want and it does. Sadly I've had many clubs on trial that I've really wanted to be "the one" for me and when I've tried them the magic hasn't been there.

Actually there have been a few women like that

With my sensible hat on (I am sure I have one somewhere) I would stick with the CBs, particularly 7i and up. I am sure they are lovely clubs, but the long iron Mbs will be less consistent, that is for sure.

Just don't be swayed if you hit the long MBs ok, in the longer term, when the pressure is on, bladed long irons will let you down. I know, I have had 4 years of it. It is easy in practice, heck, I even had a bladed 1 iron at one stage. Range, easy to hit, course, nightmare.

I agree with murph, any man who uses or used bladed 1 iron is braver than I ever was.lol.You have to be very consistant with your striking with blades, if you are you will enjoy, if not you will collapse in a heap in tears on the fairway.lol.

Good luck with them mate, I tried some of the Mizuno 57 / 67 and they made me look very silly. I would have to move in down the range to be able to hit them properly.

Jon Mate , you hit that 5.5 shaft spot on!! i dont think you will need a 6.0. Where as i couldnt hit ricky hattons nose(STOLEN) with a rifle shaft lol. But i can sure hit my better players irons with DGS300 shaft and a 24 handicap! even the three iron!!

dont forget to tell them how good your driving was too!

Hi Jon
I really hope you don't take this the wrong way mate, because maybe I'm missing something?
Not ever having played with you before I obviously haven't seen your swing, your "course management" etc. and I'm not trying to take anything away from your obvious "positive" trial of the new clubs.

But to quote you twice....

"I hit it very well indeed, was very confident with it and even got comfortable enough to try a few 20yd cuts and big draws to guage the workability".

and

"Was an amazing session tonight, 250yd carry with range-balls!!!"

How are you still playing off 27????

I play off 11 and would have difficulty getting a Callaway warbird to carry 250 yards let alone a range ball.
And "workability?" Even when I was playing off 23, thoughts like "workability" never even entered my head. "Where's the fairway" and "I'm going to snap this effing driver in half in a minute" were the type of things running through my mind at that time!
Where do you lose all of your shots?
As I say, I hope you don't take this post the wrong way, the last thing I am doing is questioning your handicap. It would just be interesting to know where you think your biggest handicap improvement is likely to come from?

Smiffy, my short-game has alsways been stinking but over the last few weeks, basically ever since I had 15mins with Zane Scotland on the practise area, my short-game has moved on a level.

My putting has come on leaps and bounds also as I had regular advice sessions from a friend of mine who is a shop/teaching professional.

Just waiting for the cuts to come mate which they will surely do. I have been playing much better than 27 for a while, its just that I havent entered many comps, none of late, due to my club issues.

OK mate.
I remember when I was playing off 23 I was driving crap, hitting irons crap.
My short game had always been reasonable, I never really practiced putting (I still NEVER venture onto the practice putting green prior to a game wherever I am playing) so guess I just had a "natural" ability for it, whereas hitting full shots was something alien to me.
Because of the shortcomings in my "long" game I used to spend an awful lot of time on the practice chipping area at Crowborough and it was here I made up my score.
Friends I played with at the time were always cheesed off when they thought I was out of the hole but managed a half (sometimes even won a hole!) by either a superb chip from the deepest crap or by canning a fairly longish putt.
I hope your efforts are rewarded with a lower handicap fairly soon mate....your always interesting input to the site deserves it if nothing else!

cheers rob, cheers parmo.

It has got a little embarassing on occassions but i am of course due to blow up again soon and shoot a 105 or something daft.

Rob, I played Crowborough for the 1st time in the GM speed of play experiment and really loved the course. Was chuffed to bits that I shot my h/cap in poor conditions with a seriously duff putting day and a silly penalty.

Was a great course though and will definately seek to play it again next year sometime.
