Just emulated Nick Faldo at the 1987 Open at Muirfield by parring every hole in a round. Didn't set out to do it but once I got through 14, started laying up at par 5s and playing more defensively than Arsenal under George Graham.

But I did have to intentionally miss an eight foot birdie putt on the 18th for the streak to continue.

So the question is, would you have done the same? If you've never been under par before then I can understand wanting to hole it but 18 straight pars is a unique enough experience to make the deliberate miss worthwhile.

Intersting achievement but I'd have sunk the birdie (or tried to)
I'm always out to shoot as low as possible.
I'd rather brag about being 1 under par than being level par.
Do you think Faldo would have done the same on the 18th at Muirfield?

Great shooting anyway - well done.

I think it makes more of a story to hear of you having 17 pars and a birdie. Knowing you deliberately missed a putt doesn't make it legitimate to me.

Still a fantastic achievement to be level par but don't like the dishonest approach to manufacture a score.

We were talking about this in the clubhouse a few weeks ago and all the low guys admitted they would go for the 18 pars over any score.

Faldo was of course trying to score the lowest he could so would never miss.

And my putter has a tendency to misbehave itself so perhaps I should have tried to hole the final putt and let nature take its course!

I would have tried to roll the birdi in, but if you are regularly under par and it was just a practice round I can maybe see why you did it.

Utter bolloxs.

'We were talking about this in the clubhouse a few weeks ago and all the low guys admitted they would go for the 18 pars over any score'.

Aye whatever, right enough I would rather shoot a level par 72 than a 66.

I can kinda understand why you did it. Especially if one under wouldn't be anywhere near your best score.

But good to do level par, especially as you knew you were heading that way and it no doubt put a bit more pressure on you. So good that you didn't collapse.

Damn fine shooting, none the less.

Interesting. I shot 8 straight pars to start a few weeks ago and the thought of Faldo did cross my mind and of course I then disintegrated. I've also shot 15 pars and 3 bogies this season too which is the nearest I've got. Funny one though as the key is not making any birdies which is a strange concept if playing well.

I understand laying up and protecting what is a great round in anyone's book but I'm less convinced by the putt at the last. You may have missed anyway and I'd say it would be a better talking point to say "never done 18 pars, done 17 and a birdie though....."

Ok well today I'll go and make 18 bogeys for a 90, just so I can say I had a complete round of bogeys.
Manufacturing a round for the ability to tell your mates that you've had a round of 18 pars isn't something I'd brag about.
Ita false, pure and simple.

I've parred the first ten holes at our course a few times during medal comps. Doing "a Faldo" has never even crossed my mind.

I've mostly been fustrated at the fact I've been playing pretty well and i haven't converted any birdie chances.

The only thing it does is make it very easy for your playing partenr to add up your score.

I suppose to some extent it depends on your handicap. If say, you play off 3 it's likely you could do it again easily enough so 18 pars would be a very symetrical card, for me off 11 on a tough course I would want the best score I could manage

Maybe if you were good enough to shoot under par regularly, then the chance to do this kind of unique score would be more appealing.

There's no way in the world that I would ever do this in a competition - this was just a friendly game before work albeit off the back tees.

I have never deliberately missed a putt. Never will. I score what I score at the end of the round. Can't understand why you wouldn't try to hole the 18th, unless you were worried about hitting it way past the hole and missing the one coming back. Bad habit to get into though.

I can see both sides of the argument here. I guess if you were trying to par everything from the start, then fine. If you're that good that shooting 1 under is not anything special, then fine.

However, if you had been making par because you weren't putting well enough to birdie holes, and the only one was the last, then I'd maybe work on my putting?

I wouldn't do it, as my lowest score ever is still only 81, but if it's something you wanted to do, then well done!

I always thought the name of the game was to shoot as low as possible, rather than trying to emulate some kind of unique score? Whatever next...."I double-bogeyed every 3rd hole just because I could...." Man alive.....what it must be like to be "good enough" to simply toy with your card like that! :o
