Watched Mickelson at the Memorial last night and could not believe he hit a wedge 163 yrds stone dead to a par 3 that Tiger took an 8 iron on. You can have all of your long hitters but that in my book is phenomenal the man is a beast. What do you take from 163? I'm a 6 iron all day.

Does it matter? I'd be highly scepticle if he really hit a wedge especially if none of the other players did the same. He's long, but Mickleson isn't the longest and even with a howling wind I'd doubt he could really get a wedge out there

That is a bl**dy long way to hit a wedge.

For me at the moment if it's warm like it has been it's between a 7 & 8 iron.

Homer, it doesn't matter to me but it came direct from the caddie who relayed it to the commentator that's what he hit to that distance. just saying that is some distance with a wedge, try it next time you are out pound to a penny your coming up short like me ;)

Thats roughly my 150 mtr mark......And i usually hit a smooth 7 Iron to the centre........

Just out if Interest DB....What loft did it have.....It may have been PW loft

I am not privvy to that info mate, but I doubt he would have more than a 8 iron loft and that is still some welt!

the loft on his pitching wedge is 48.5 degrees it was 48 but he hits it that long he needed some loft added. The guy is long but he never won...

The new grooves will make no difference to the top pro's off a perfect lie, like a tee. Plus that course was very wet. It's an impressive distance to hit a wedge but I could have stopped a ball on those greens :D

Beggsy, don't give me that pal you'd ave got on with a putter, I've played with you don't forget, and if any of you haven't had the pleasure this guy is LONG!!!! mind you we both scored 36 points and I can't hit it for toffee. ;)

I don't know the hole so it is difficult to guess what I would have used but it does seem a long way for a wedge.
There is a par 3 at my course that plays 160-175 from an elevated tee. It can be a 4 to 9 iron depending on wind etc
