You need a Tape Measure........

I dont know the exact process dave, but all I do know is that he's damn good, and if using a Tape Measure helps him get that good, then so be it, who am I to argue.
I think he works out the average distance or something, from each target, and then notes it down from each session, and I would guess over the season, he has a record of the improvement.

Is it any more obcessive than a Pro not leaving a putting green until he's holed 25/50 in a row ?

All I know is that altho I'm trying to improve, i havent got that dedication, or talent.

I have already said I admire his dedication and ambition and if he is keeping a record of progression that would make sense. I'm still not overly convinced its truely necessary to go to those lengths but when he's winning on the main Tour I'll hold my hand up and say I was wrong

in fairness to those of us that think it's a bit odd, we were't slagging off the chap's drive and ambition.

Fair enough Dave

Maybe the guy doesnt use the tape on his longer stuff but has it to measure the 3/6/12 foot stuff around the greens :D

Sometimes Chris I just can't understand the self importance of some people on the Forum.

Your OP was about a young guy who has an interesting practice regime for a certain part of his game. He has a handicap at the moment of 0.6. Some here can understand and appreciate what he is doing and would do something similar to improve their game if time, family, commitment, etc would allow.

Others seem to want to decry what he is doing for reasons not really clear. Still, this lad is playing nearly off scratch. They aren't and probably will never get anywhere near it, particularly with their attitude.

Get a life guys. It works for him. It could work to some extent for you.

Simples :)

Two mutually exclusive ideas there mate.

Get a life and practice your 50 yard pitching to within 12"

I love golf, but...

Now, if I had a chance. Even one chance in a thousand, to make it to become a pro ( even a jobbing pro ) at this game, how much effort would I be willing to put in to get there ?

Stupid question, isn't it.

It seems that noone is decrying the idea of his practice. It's the tape measure that is laughable. But golf is a game of numbers. We all want the numbers to come down. When you are playing to 20 it doesn't take much improvement to drop a couple of shots off your handicap.

But when you are playing off 2 it's down to tiny margins.

To improve we should all keep records. That's all this guy is doing. By keeping records he will notice if the trend is still downwards ( even if at very small margins ) or if he's letting it slip at all.

Did anyone look at Robobum's County Skills Test ?

These guys are expected to get 6 out of 8 full drives into a 'fairway' 24 yards wide.

By putting this sort of pressure on yourself when you are practising, then it should add confidence when the pressure is on in the squeeky bum moments of a competitive round.
