Yet Another New Olympic Sport

Could say the same about the refereeing of any number of sports.

Sports judged by a panel of officials are no less of a sport than those with scores / times etc.

Disagree a referee is the arbiter of the rules within a contest and interprets the rules, he/she does not decide the winner. In events like diving, a panel decide the winner based on their opinion of who performed best, they decide the winner and do no simply interpret the rules. Rules are open to interpretation based on the situation, the winner should not be open to similar debate.

Is there really that much difference from "whoever climbs to the top quickest wins" to "whoever runs to the line quickest wins"??

Wall climbing is flipping hard work and they are supremely fit - in all aspects of the word "strength, speed, stamina and flexibility".

I'm imagining the moment, you have applied for Olympic tickets, you are hoping for athletics or maybe swimming. You open the email and you have.............rock climbing. Not the finest for a spectator.

Did you go to any of the events in London ?

I managed to see some of the events like Dressage , , canoeing , diving etc and the atmosphere was brilliant no matter what the event was - it was better than any of the football matches. People going to the Olympics in London got fully behind the whole idea of what the Olympics were about and that included dancing horses and people drowning with an arm up - I have no doubt the spectators would get behind anyone climbing up the wall and the atmosphere will be there. It's all about being involved in the Olympics and it's something I witnessed first hand when working at London

It's amazing what happens when an event competes in the Olympics

Or the 20k walk!!! I agree and unlike others wouldn't find the fact that it's "the Olympics" enough to make me watch a sport I have no interest in, probably don't understand enough about and will on.y ever watch that one time. It's part of my issue with the whole thing (not a huge fan) is all these obscure sports are all over the TV to fill the huge schedules given over to showing it all. How many really care or suddenly think "you know what I've always meant to sit down and watch the Olympic wrestling"

There was talk, a couple of weeks ago, of introducing jousting as an Olympic event.
Now, that I'd love to see.
It's also steeped in the tradition of many nations worldwide.

16,000 watching a Hockey match will live long with me!

Why would anyone care what new sports are in the Olympics? If you don't like it you're not forced to watch it!

Its on every 4 years. It's not going to end your life just because rock climbing has been added to the list of sports.

Some people on here just seem to moan for the sake of it. It's quite pathetic.

Are you talking about knights on horses or gladiators with giant Q tips?

I think the Olympics need updating otherwise we would still be watching teams pulling on a rope and painting.
However, the controversy is always what to can and what to include.

I would only include sports where the Olympics are the pinnacle of it. If you could only ever win one event it would be it, not Wimbledon, not the Open, not the Tour de France or the Champions League. Gold is what it is all about.

Rock climbing would probably fulfil that. And I only watched it a couple of times on TV many tears ago, it is spectacular to watch.

Olympic sports should encompass strength, speed and endurance. If it doesn't include one or more of those then its shouldn't be an Olympic sport.
Rock Climbing, Track and Field, Cycling and Swimming work, Golf, Football, Hockey and Tennis and many more don't....

Typo in there?

Being the fastest human on the planet has got to cover strength & speed!

I'm guessing that's a joke ? Especially in regards Hockey which includes all three you mention

Isn't skill a big part of sport yet you suggest skill sports shouldn't be included ?

The Olympics thankfully don't view it your way and include many sports as long as they are widely played

sport or discipline is included in the Olympic program if the IOC determines it is widely practiced around the world, that is, the number of countries that compete in a given sport is the indicator of the sport's prevalence. The IOC's requirements reflect participation in the Olympic Games as well—more stringent toward men (as they are represented in higher numbers) and Summer sports (as more nations compete in the Summer Olympics).

Phil, it's an opinion - it doesn't match yours - don't take it personally.

It's also quite dismissive of certain sports and what it takes to play those sports though so it's actually incorrect opinion - you suggest that sports like Hockey , Tennis , Football doesn't include - speed , strength and endurance - which is clearly wrong or ill informed at best and actually quite insulting to a lot of people who train very hard in the attributes you mention.

I'd like to see the Javelin event become a pairs team sport where the 2nd person has to catch it (could also work for discus etc)

Have you seen a game of Hockey recently?
