• Thank you all very much for sharing your time with us in 2025. We hope you all have a safe and happy 2026!

Would you waste a year of your life to get to scratch?

I would love to try. The people that say they have too many other things to do instead, do you currently work? Your work hours can be golf hours now and still do what you currently do.

A lottery win and I would have to give it a go, golf has been in my life since I was 12(long time ago) and it can be the most frustrating and most satisfying game in the world.

As the famous line goes (say in a Marlon Brando voice) "I could've been a contender"

Dont think its something that needs practise if you are good your are good and if you are not you are not...

??????????????????????? Obviously you have got to practice this game. That is why you will see tour pros out on ranges between tournaments hitting anything up to 500 balls a day. That is them practising ironing things out. Vijay Singh openly admitted that he was not the most naturally talented golfer but with hitting lots of balls and practising he can maintain the standard required.

If the situation is that if I had a year free (i.e. didn't need to work) would I want to spend every day on the golf course practising and playing in the hope of getting to scratch, then yes, why not. I assume the necessary coaching is thrown in. I have few other hobbies and it would keep me out from under Mrs MN's feet and keep me fit and healthy. I might do it even if the aim was to get to s/f. It's only what I'm planning to do when I retire anyway. :)

A year off work to play golf every day and strive for genuine excellence? Er yes of course - why would anyone say no? A year without constraints to do anything you love has got to be one of the best oppourtunities that life can serve up. I am amazed at those saying no. You must really love your jobs!

That said, if it was a choice between having a year off to see how good I could get at golf or the same deal but for squash then it would be squash every time. I can think of at least 20 other interests that I have that I would like a year out to focus on too.

A year playing golf, no financial or work worries, Yes I would.

Would I get to scratch.......... No.

Realistic goal for me would be single figures.

without a shadow of doubt I would.

Work is work just that. If I won the lottery that’s all I’d do — play golf and try to get to scratch. Play in AM comps, have coaching / lessons.

I am frustrated at the mo because I don’t play enough golf :-(

There is nothing I would rather do with my life if my wife and child were looked after. You better believe that I would put the work in, day and night... I am exited just thinking about it. I think it would be a wonderful personal challenge.

If I won the lottery this is exactly what I would do, by a house on the edge of a nice course and live on it. Sadly I don't do the lottery...

Would absolutely love to be able to but...................seeing as it is a wish......

I'm looking outside now and watching the snow fall and it being 1 or 2 degrees - would anyone want to practice or play in this?? So a year out in Dubai....yeah too right.

Also, it takes a special breed of person to stand all alone on the practice ground day in and day out......I'd want some company, not necessarily a coach, just a mate or even my wife just for a chat and a joke along the way.

So true, it gets very, very, very x 100, lonely. Playing golf for fun is one thing but doing something more than occasionally can quickly become more of a grind than fun, let's face it how many forumers REALLY stand on a putting green doing drills for 2 hours...or in a bunker for 2 hours (or more)?

This reminds me when I played Celtic Manor some weeks back. I was practising putting just before teeing off and a guy came up and started doing putting drills. Off I went played my 4 1/2 hour round and when I came back he was still there practising. IF he was there that long that is dedication for you and I can only assume this is what is required to maintain a + handicap.

No I wouldn't do it. I would swap it for running training though.

Very true it gets so boring, I used to get so bored when grinding out the practice sessions down the range! Couldn't even listen to music as made me lose rhythm!

Just to play of scratch, no. To turn pro and at least have a fighting chance of making reasonable money, you bet your 'arris!
Top answer , i was wondering why the question was .. would you waste ?.. like Brendy said just to get to scratch no . as a means to an end yes , but then it wouldnt be a waste ..

Guy wrote a book about this think it's called dream on, he wanted to get to scratch but quickly changed it to breaking par inside a year from a 18 handicap. Think you would need to be able to play close to single figures before you started to have a chance, lots of under par rounds required to get to scratch.
Don't think the body would be able to take it now but would love to give it a shot.
