• Thank you all very much for sharing your time with us in 2025. We hope you all have a safe and happy 2026!

Would you waste a year of your life to get to scratch?

1) have a 2 hour lesson every week
2) put in 10 hours of practice a week putting the lessons into place
3) have sports psychologist talk to them each week
4) play 2/3 rounds a week (one of which must be a club comp)
5) get custom fitted with all the gear
Would this be enough....?

Just to play of scratch, no. To turn pro and at least have a fighting chance of making reasonable money, you bet your 'arris!

THis is my answer.

Some time back we had a thread about what your dream prize in a comp would be. Mine was to have all the coaching required + 2 year exemption to the Senior Tour..........
Still got time..

With no time/life restraints then I don't think I'd see it as a sacrifice rather than a privilege so yes I'd do it. The practice element isn't a problem generally as I'm a tad OCD and my obsession is golf !

i doubt anyone with a club handicap could do it with just club comps. not enough comps to acheive it unless you perform well under handicap in EVERY comp you enter.

In a heartbeat if I genuinely didn't have to worry about the mortgage, bills etc and could devote a year to just golf. I'd put the hours in and like Amanda can be a bit OCD about my golf (surely not). I think the issue of comps is mute as my club runs at least two a month on average at weekends plus midweek ones I rarely get a chance to play but obviously would with all this time free.

On top of that I'd be entering opens etc too so I could go to other courses and not becoem a one track jockey. There was a thing in TG about a guy who tried to get from 28 to scratch in a year and I think he got as far as 14 or 15. Not a bad effort but proves how hard it can be. In a glass half full moment I think with time to get the short game demons cured and to find someone that could work within what I have rather than changing the wheel I could get pretty close and would be upset if I wasn't at least 3 by the end.

As I've not won the lottery and I doubt GM will pay my cost of living and mortgage for a year sadly it'll remain a pipe dream. If the chance came up though I'm head of the queue

with no restraints i would jump at the chance.....But then id have to ask myself "what now"..........

Its all well and good getting to scratch but in my opinion the level of discipline needed after reaching scratch to maintain that sort of skill would quickly be realised with the addition of family and work commitments......

Id still chance it though ;)

I've already wasted 15 years at it and not made it to scratch, what makes you think another year would make a difference? In truth I would be happy to get back to 3 and be done with it, but YES I would love to get to scratch and would be willing to put in the effort I never put in when I got to 3. Oh the joy's of hindsight.

Not for me - I have too many other things that are important to me as well. Much as I would like to get as low as possible I couldn't justify the amount of time I would have to spend practising at the expense of everything else I enjoy in life least of all the most important thing, my family. As much as I love my golf it isn't the be all and end all in my existence.

So what do you do afterwards..?

Try to find another job - your old one will be gone....
Turn Pro? - Probably not anywhere near good enough
Keep going? - who's going to fund that.?

Nice idea but in the real World there's not many that would be able to even contemplate thinking about doing it.

No! 100% Not. Never.

The point is that if I got there, I might enjoy it for a while, but as soon as life kicked back it, I'd then be on a long-term downward (h'cap upward) spiral of despair.

I was bad enough getting to 8 and expecting to stay there and enjoying golf years later back off 12.

I think it would have to be something you'd enjoy for the process and the year off knowing you'd never get back there after a while. Then, maybe

Dave I totally get what you're saying but wouldn't you want that moment of satisfaction. You're a musician so wouldn't it be like having a one off gig at an iconic venue - a chance to peak your career

Yes, definitely yes.

Its not just being off scratch, its the quality of golf you'd be playing. The buzz of a good birdie run in a scratch comp... oh yes please.

So what if your game slipped a bit afterwards. The memories would be worth it.

I wouldn't waste a year of uninterrupted golf worrying about what my handicap was.

I'd spend the cost of lesson's on mid-week tee deals at as many quality courses as possible, play at the club at the weekends and just enjoy the golf.

I would spend plenty of time practicing but only to increase my enjoyment - as long as my handicap reflects the level of my golf I wouldn't care what the actual number was.

Be serious - when have you seen him practice?

It's currently in discussion, I don't think she's that enthused, which doesn't help.

I've spent close to 3 years reading/learning everything I can possibly get my hands on, I've been through injury after injury, changed to a swing that I don't practice, got a set of second hand Mizzy's, a driver I can hit a mile, love the short stick too and the video camera is sitting on the shelf going obsolete.

.....must be the Winter blues

Some very interesting answers such as THEN WHAT and afterwards you watch your h/cap go back up... I've been through that already and it's not much fun. I think that may be my issue... I know what's coming and can't seem to keep myself in the moment. Might start by buying an iPod :)
