• Thank you all very much for sharing your time with us in 2025. We hope you all have a safe and happy 2026!

Would you waste a year of your life to get to scratch?

I would love the opportunity to get to scratch. Then I would give up work and become a PGA head pro at some club and play on the club pro circuit. So no it would not be a waste if I did that.

u make it sound so simple to be head pro lol, just being off scratch doesnt mean much as a level of golfer, still takes passing the playability which seems to be surprisingly tough for some people which is pretty funny as the cut off is like +15 over 2 rounds!!!! but then have to do the PGA course which takes 3 years of selling chocolate bars behind a shop counter going nuts with boredom! its not such a fun life!

If it took a whole year to get to scratch would you sacrifice your life and do the practice required? (assuming you were able to, eg: no restraints)

HELL YEAH!!! In a heartbeat. Golf for a whole year. Why doesn't Golf Monthly do a test and find a committed 18 handicapper who is willing to undergo a pro like treatment

1) have a 2 hour lesson every week
2) put in 10 hours of practice a week putting the lessons into place
3) have sports psychologist talk to them each week
4) play 2/3 rounds a week (one of which must be a club comp)
5) get custom fitted with all the gear

As an experiment to see if you can get someone who gets a shot on every hole to one who plays off scratch. What an experiment that would be!

Not for me, want to get back to cat 1 and possibly play in some of the amateur events but not fussed with getting back down as low as before.

If you'd said +4 then I'd be interested :)

18 to scratch in 1 year? lol

u cudnt even play anywhere near enough comps to manage this

but would be interesting to see what someone could achieve with no boundaries hindering them!!!

I think it would actually be easier to get a new person to scratch than a player whose been at it for a longer time.
They will be taught correctly from the start rather than need all their ingrained faults fixed which I would believe would take longer.

You could on general play could? If you put in a number of good cards?

What do you think someone off 28 could get to within a year if taught correctly? Given the complete package of correct instruction. Long game, short game, course management etc etc
Like in the post suggesting the lessons and practice play etc etc

so hard to say it depends if sum1 has been hanging around 28 for years or is new to the game! would say 28 to single fingers is doable for sum1 new ish to the game

No for me as I have my sports plan already mapped out

Football
Tennis
Golf
Bowles
Shuv happenny
Die

I have decided not to do a blog on "how to be a shuv halfpenny champ in one year" I hope that put your minds at rest

I volunteer Homer!

well talent can restrict the level u can get to of course along with mental side of the game but constructive correct practice u will obviously improve

I agree but your talent will alow you to practise at the level needed so if you aint good enough the level of constructive practise needed might not always help. everyone can improve but at different levels

yeh i mean this is true, age plays a big part of this aswel, i think say anyone aged from say 18-30 cud achieve close to a scratch handicap without having a dynamic talent for golf, but going from scratch to the +4 stage is very down to having specific talent imo

edit: not talking about in a short time frame just talking in general

i doubt anyone with a club handicap could do it with just club comps. not enough comps to acheive it unless you perform well under handicap in EVERY comp you enter.

Why not esp if i had nothing better to do :)

There was a guy up here that went from never playing before to a 4 handicap in less than 2 years, not sure what happened after that though. Maybe I'll ask next time i'm up where he was having lessons,
