If it took a whole year to get to scratch would you sacrifice your life and do the practice required? (assuming you were able to, eg: no restraints)

No.

There is no reward for getting to scratch, and a year is a long time to concentrate purely on golf. I would not want to get bored of it, it's menat to be my hobby.

am not sure i would... because I would only be absolutely devastated when i went back to work the following year and my handicap began rising! surely that we be more demoralising?!

Hmmm.... As it happens I am taking a year out of work next year. I plan to play a lot of golf and, hopefully, improve a fair bit (10 h'cap at the moment). Don't think scratch is realistic though, and I hope to be having a great time doing a few things other than golf.

Taken me long enough to get to 19:D, so it would have to be a life long plan to get to scratch. So the answer is no.

With no time/life restraints then I don't think I'd see it as a sacrifice rather than a privilege so yes I'd do it. The practice element isn't a problem generally as I'm a tad OCD and my obsession is golf !

Nope. Part of the fun is gradually coming down for me. I don't think scratch would be maintainable without a lot of practice each week as well. My long term aim is single figures by the age of 30. Only 4 years left, better get a move on!!!

If I had the availability in life to take a year out of work then I would like to think that I would then be able to take more lessons on each specific aspect of the game to get each part honed in.
Looking within my club the majority of our Cat 1 players only play once a week and each has a weekness with in their game that if they spent 1 hour a week practicing for a few months then I could see them making and maintaining scratch golf.
The 4 club pros I know play very little golf, sometimes lucky to get 6 holes a week yet maintain a scratch or better level of play. Then when you see them start to play more regularly they shoot the under par scores.

If you spent the year learning the correct technique i don't see why not.

having already made sacrifices growing up to get to the standard i did.....

of course i would !!!

but i wouldnt call it a waste ;)
