So, its our final Medal of the year next Saturday, and the last event in our 1st Division Order of Merit, of which the top 10 places get points toward it.

I'm lying in joint 3rd on 27pts, and the leader is at 33pts.

However, after yesterdays Stableford of 30pts, and quite frankly some shabby golf, Im wondering whether another performance like that is worth the result it would bring ?
If I did, it would mean me up another 0.1 to 9.5, thus ending the year off 10 after finally achieving my Single figure target of 9.2, and would finish the year off on a disapointing note.

Howver, one good round could in theory still have me in contention for one of the Clubs prestigious honours, and my name in Gold letters on the board up on the wall, which goes back 100yrs.

Frustratingly, since I got to 9, Ive played like a drain.

So its all or nothing I guess, I need to finish in the Top 4 and hope the leader bombs it, or not bother and stay off 9 over the winter.
Risk & reward I guess.........

opinions ? What would you do ?

I probably would, but it depends what your attitude is like. If you are going to defend your single figure handicap, you may come unstuck. If you are going to play well and get up that leaderboard, much better.

If you do go up to 10, you can fix it first comp next season.

I would play the comp every time , no point sitting at home wondering about it. Get out there and just play instead of worrying about the consequences of a bad round. Crikey its only 0.1 if you play bad , not the end of the world.

If you want the 9 h/c as some sort of status symbol over the winter then stay at home but youve still got a lot of golf to play in the future so get some positive thoughts going and get out there and forget about your h/c.

Mickelson 6 shots back from Tiger going into the final round - you reckon he wants to go home ...or card a 62?

Play of course... that's what golf is all about, you can't do it from the sofa :D

...and the best of luck to you... go get 'em! :D

If you can't play to it then it's quite obvious that you aren't supposed to have that handicap.

Everyone should play in as many things as their own commitments allow, that way you know that you h'cap is 100% accurate.

Protecting handicaps is not the done thing, I find it quite unsporting, even though its protecting a low hcp just for the sake of calling oneself "single figure golfer"

Its not exactly 'protecting' it - its just that after achieving it after 20yrs playing, I just didnt wanna lose it after 3weeks !

After a good year of Golf, I know its accurate, just perhaps too much 'trying' going on recently.

You're right, get out there and give it a shot, and accept whatever comes along....

You wouldn't be in single figures if you're not capable of playing to it, chin up mate, birdie on the first, birdie on the second............

alternatively you could retire and never risk losing the single figure status :D No shame in being 9.5 though.

regards...

Whats the problem? You know you can get down to 9, so play the comp. Whatever happens you'll give it your best shot. If you have a poor round you go up, but then you have the challenge of working on your game through the winter to get back down to 9 next year. If you don't play you may never have the chance to get on the honours board again.

Chris, it's pretty obvious from your handicap graph that it follows a trend similar to most people. You have a good spell and get cut then take time to adjust and become competent at that new handicap level.

Whilst single figures may be a badge of honour for some, it means little unless you maintain it by playing.

Just go and play without worrying whether you are 9 or 10 when you finish. You may shoot way under and be looking at a place on the honours board and a 9 handicap that actually starts with 8. something!! :D

What difference will it make if you back to 10. One more shot to play with next time and a decent round will see you cut back down anyway. If the prize is as prestigious as you describe then for me I'd be fighting tooth and nail to win and then trusting the guys I need to beat have an off day. Can't win if you're not in

I don't agree with protecting handicap up or down, so I'd say play it, and enjoy it.

I don’t know, some people only play the minimum required to keep theirs going. I know a +2 player who will not play in adverse conditions knowing his HC could well go up. He still plays lots of medal rounds at two courses and is a genuine +2 player that’s for sure. What denotes protecting a HC anyway, they guy who plays a handful of medals or the +2 guy who’s never off the golf course.

If he's only playing in conditions that suit him and his golf, is that not protecting it?
