I voted no. I think modern golf clubs need to be fully inclusive. I have to temper that by saying in my time at Wimbledon Common, it was single sex in that we had no women members (although they were welcome to play). I joined as a junior and so knew no different. These days, personally I think it's not right. Others will disagree and that's fine

London Scottish was the same - ladies could play but could not be members. I have no issue with single sex members clubs, whether they be ladies or men only - if that's how they want to operate then fine.

Assuming this is triggered by the Muirfield issue and so refers to single sex course-owning clubs.

I wouldn't if there was a suitable alternative but it wouldn't be a showstopper if the only decent local club happened to be women only. Of course, these are few and far between so, for women at least, this is a hugely hypothetical question.

I don't have any problem with single-sex clubs where they share fair access to a course as happens at many of the public courses round the country.

A more important issue, which does not attract the headlines and hysteria that Muirfield are getting is that very few mixed-sex clubs truly offer the same experience for women as they do for men. Lots of reasons for that, not all down to sexism or whatever, but it's a fact. I've posted before that there isn't a single course in the area that ticks all the boxes for what I want from a golf club but several that would do if I were male.

LiverpoolPhil's club sounds like a great model that others should follow. I know many on here couldn't give two hoots about women's golf but I do and in a changing world where the majority of young women now work it will die unless the clubs evolve.

I wouldn't go near a club with just male members only

Our club is all the better for the ladies , so much of the unseen work around the club house and course is all led by the ladies along with a working group of both ladies and men

The bar is open to all and regulary see ladies there - they are play on the course every day , every single weekend medal and Stableford is open to everyone and isn't just a male medal etc - it has encouraged families to join , working ladies plus their husbands , it had increased the fields on mixed competitions and is breaking down the need for "ladies day". Each section have their own board comps.

Everything is all about balance and golf being open to all - it's part of the EGU and R&A drive and their reported upcoming charter on more inclusivity will encourage more clubs to be open to all.

Our club is thriving both on and off the course due to the improvements made in regards the course and inclusive nature of the club to the point we are full ( first time for a while ) and have a waiting list that grows each month. Our next step is stronger links to local schools

I learnt to play golf in a different country and generally their attitude to this is very different. As was said in another thread I really hope in 15-20 years we look back at these discussions and laugh at how irrelevant they are. I really hope my children are members of mixed clubs where membership is open to all and mixed competitions are a healthy part of the competition calendar. Men and women playing together but competing in different competitions like my club abroad did every week. I try to set an example to them so that they look to and hopefully advance. For that reason I would not join a male only club. In fact I am not sure I could justify to them why their mother could not be a member. I would be absolutely crucified at the dinner table discussion.

Same model as The Wynyard Club in the northeast of England, and with the same results.

However, I know of two clubs where the ladies voted to retain the original business model, not wanting any part of the inclusivity because of the increase in fees it would have meant.

Its not just men standing in the way of progress.

We still have work to do with some ladies comp days and how they are entered and have opposition on our ideas from both ladies and men members not happy with trying to make it more inclusive but thankfully those dissenting voices are getting quieter

No problem with this statement - your choice!

Our club is all the better for the ladies , so much of the unseen work around the club house and course is all led by the ladies along with a working group of both ladies and men

But this statement is POTENTIALLY as sexist as any I have seen on here! I hope it wasn't meant that way!

Btw. The Poll/thread isn't about how your particular club treats either/both sexes, nor how it may/may not have improved the course; it's about whether you would join a single-sex one if the 'golf only' attributes ticked the boxes!

Oh, and 'Ladies Day' has always been a bit of an enigma, as has 'Seniors Day(s!)', but I've mellowed to that over time! I've often described my membership as 2-Day rather than 7-Day!

...

I've no issue with that approach either - provided the difference in fees was 'appropriate'!

Forcing integration isn't necessarily 'progress'! Treating everyone equally (but recognising differences, so 'according to need') is my approach!

I really don't see many women playing golf at the courses I play & the ones I do see tend to be older.
Is this the norm?

Nope wouldn't join

If for no other reason than the single gender policy is likely to be indicative to other policies & rules the club retain from a bygone age, naturally with like-minded members and that would make it just not my type of club

I like to be able to play with both my parents and with all of my friends. In mixed groups whenever possible. So no. Even though, as I said elsewhere, I would like to play a golf course that was designed with female players in mind.

Not for the first time I agree with Slab.

As I don't play mixed golf I really cannot see what difference it would make to me.

Having said that I am opposed to anyone being barred from membership on the grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality or any other generalisation.

No for me. Mainly as HID plays and we both enjoy mixed golf. I also think the dynamics would be awful if it was just women - so much bitchiness!

I chuckled at the comment about putting xmas decorations up but actually have always refused to help when the ladies section ask for it for decorations, raffles etc etc. If the whole club isn't asked to contribute then I won't bother.
