Played in a matchplay the other day had a good round with a very friendly guy, just what golf should be about great company and a close match ( I lost)

But on 3 greens he pickup without me conceding, I would have conceded the three puts they were that close.

But I just couldn't bring myself to bring him up on it and possible spoil a very enjoyable day.

Interested on thoughts others have on this situation .

What was the match, bounce game, club knockout or something else?

Personally wouldve made a comment the first time along the lines of "next time you pick it up without me conceding ill have to claim the hole" , the level of jokiness in my voice would be dependent on the type of game. In anything bar a bounce game id have claimed the hole 2nd time round

What sort of game is it - during bounce games within a foot we just take the ball away normally

He picked up three time?
In matchplay, if my ball is one inch from the hole, I will lean down ready to pick it up, but not do so until conceded.
I would have pointedly said "that's good" after one picked up the first one to make it clear that he should have waited

Were you dithering about conceding? Normally oponents aren't quick enough to pick the ball up before i say ok

I'm assuming this was a proper knockout raher than just a bounce game- in the latter we take anything under 2 foot away automatically

I only play bounce games, but I never assume it's a gimmie. I will ask "are you giving me that?" Usual reply is "nah,I've seen you miss them"

After the first time I would have said I'd rather you let me decide if that's a gimme rather I than just assuming...3 times is taking the piss. Like others I always ask if I am unsure, a simple "is that good" does the trick.

I would never assume someone had conceded me a putt unless they said so, the guy was out of order, you should have said something the first time he did it.

It was a proper matchplay comp. wasn't dithering about conceding,he just picked up before I could say anything.

I think you should have mentioned it after the first time - in a friendly way of course. No matter whether it's a friendly or any comp it's etiquette to not assume a gimmie, until conceded.

A difficult one, especially being an enjoyable round that you didn't want to spoil.

Don't think he was taking anything, as I said he was a really nice guy but not to clever with the rules, normally I'm a stickler for the rules but on this occasion I felt we were having such a good time it seemed to me more important to enjoy the day rather than maybe spoil it with something that wouldn't have affected the outcome of the match.

Then i think you are fine and i wouldnt worry about it too much

Can't believe anyone would just pick the ball up without it being conceded! If it was me and the putt hadn't been conceded I would say "do you want me to mark that or just finish it off" so that there is no confusion. On the flip side if you are going to concede a putt early in the round do it quickly so that it becomes obvious you are going to the one deciding if its conceded so if you haven't said anything then clearly you haven't given it.
